Softball Earns 2013 NCAA Division III Tournament Bid
SALEM – The Roanoke College softball team is back in title contention after being named in the field of 62 for the 2013 NCAA Division III Softball Championship.  The Maroons will host the eight-team Salem Regional from May 9-12 at the James I. Moyer Complex in Salem.

This is the second year in a row, and ninth overall year that the Maroons have been able to enter the NCAA DIII Softball Tournament, last advancing as an automatic qualifier in 2012.  In the The Maroons are led in hitting by two First Team All-ODAC performers.  Senior Leona Rainey batted .432 through the season, tallying a team high 48 hits and 22 stolen bases.  Senior Alea Bier enters tournament play with a batting average of .378, with 38 runs scored for the Maroons.  Kelly Higbie, a two-time All-ODAC selection will help command the circle for Roanoke, pitching 149.2 innings, striking out 85 batters and picking up 16 wins.  Roanoke's final All-ODAC selection of the year, Stephanie Clark, led the team in RBIs with 43 and has batted .313 so far.

The Maroons will take on Christopher Newport University on Thursday, May 9th at Noon on Field One at the Moyer Complex.  The Maroons defeated the Captains twice in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, as CNU was ranked #10 in the nation.  The Maroons won in a Sunday game, 4-1, then came back on Monday and was victorious 3-1, advancing to the NCAA Championships in Salem.  The Captains reach the NCAA Tournament for the seventh consecutive year.  Leading the team into the Regional Tournament is USA South Player of the Year, Sabrina Hill.  Hill is batting .378 through the 2013 campaign with eight home runs and 51 RBIs.
