Roanoke Softball Drops Two in Season Opening Double Header
BRISTOL - The Roanoke College softball team dropped two games to NAIA opponent Virginia Intermont College, 1-0 and 7-6 on Thursday evening. The Maroons start their season with a record of 0-2, while the Cobras are now 7-3 on the year.

Neither team crossed the plate until the fifth inning of the first game. The Cobras scored the lone run in the contest as Tamara Campbell led off the inning with a double. After two ground outs, Shelby May hit a single to right center field that plated Campbell, with May picking up the RBI. The Cobras' pitching held the Maroons at bay for the rest of the contest, with Virginia Intermont winning the first game, 1-0.

Kelly Higbie got Roanoke's two hits for the first game, going 2-3 in the effort. Higbie also pitched the contest, giving up just one run off four hits, striking out five.

Virginia Intermont had four different players with one hit each. Michalah Sacre performed well on the mound, giving up just two hits and striking out 14 batters.

The Maroons got the bats going in the second contest, putting up two runs in the first inning. After Taylor Sutherland and Higbie singled with one out on the board, Autumn Hill followed up with a double to right center field, plating Sutherland. Higbee crossed the plate on a passed ball, giving Roanoke a 2-0 lead after just the first inning.

Katelyn Gallegher reached first base on an error in the bottom of the inning, allowing Sacre to score from second base. After two more batters got on the base paths for the Cobras, Lindsey Wilkins hit a three-run home run, tallying three RBIs and taking a 4-2 lead after the first inning. Virginia Intermont scored one run in each of the second and third innings, extending its lead to 6-2 after three innings.

The Maroons were hot in the fourth inning. Rhea Schleicher led off with a triple to right center field, then crossed the plate after a throwing error in the next at bat. Emily Lawrence hit a double in the next at-bat, picking up an RBI by plating Sarah Groft. Stephanie Clark hit a single, allowing Lawrence to score from second. Sutherland came up next to hit a single up the middle, allowing Clark to score, tying the game at 6-6 after four innings. However, Sacre led off the bottom of the 4th inning with a home run, which would be the final run of the game, as Virginia Intermont won game two, 7-6.

Four Maroons finished with two hits in the game, including Clark, Sutherland Higbie and Schleicher, all of which finished with one run each. Sarah Groft and Emily Lawrence also added one RBI each to the game. Clark pitched six innings for the Maroons, giving up eight hits and struck out two.

Virginia Intermont's Sacre, Campbell and Forney all finished with two hits each, with Sacre and Wilkins each hitting home runs in the game. Wilkins led all players with three RBIs in the game. Lauren Smith picked up the win with four innings pitched, two hits and two strikeouts.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday and Sunday, February 22-23 as they participate in the Triangle Classic hosted by Meredith and Peace. The Maroons will play Meredith, St. Andrews Presbyterian, #3 Salisbury and Peace.
