Softball Splits Pair in Day One of Triangle Classic
RALEIGH, NC - The Roanoke College softball team split a pair of games on Saturday afternoon, defeating Meredith College 8-5, but falling to St. Andrews 4-1. The Maroons now have a record of 1-3 on the season.

The Maroons opened the first game, putting a run on the board early. Emily Lawrence hit an RBI single to left field, plating Stephanie Clark, giving the Maroons a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Maroons wouldn't find the plate again until the fourth inning, when Lawrence hit a lead-off home run to right center field, picking up her second RBI of the game and putting the Maroons ahead 2-0 after the top of the fourth.

In the top of the fifth inning, Taylor Sutherland reached base on a walk, followed by Kelly Higbie who singled to center field, putting two players on the base paths. Roanoke's next batter, Lawrence, hit her second home run of the game, this time to left center field. She plate three runs, giving the Maroons a 5-0 lead. The Maroons scored three more in the top of the sixth inning as well. As Taylor Sutherland reached on an error, Stephanie Clark scored from third, tallying Roanoke's sixth run. Emily Lawrence earned another RBI with a single to right field, scoring Sutherland from second base. Kelly Higbie also crossed the plate on a wild pitch, making Roanoke's third run of the inning. After the top of the sixth, Roanoke led 8-0.

Meredith's Katlyn Johnson led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to left center field, scoring the team's first run of the game. Three batters later, Ashley Green hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Lorri Cole. After another batter, Whitney Williams hit a two-RBI single to left field, bringing the Avenging Angels within four, 8-4. Meredith would only score one more run in the bottom of the seventh as Roanoke picked up the victory, 8-5.

Roanoke freshman Emily Lawrence went 4-4 in the game, hitting two home runs, scoring two runs and picking up six RBIs. Kelly Higbie went 2-4 with two runs scored. Stephanie Clark and Taylor Sutherland each finished with one hit and two runs scored. Kelly Higbie pitched all seven innings, striking out five.

Meredith was led by Ashley Green, who picked up two hits, two RBIs and one run scored. Amanda Beirne (0-1) was tabbed with the loss, giving up five runs off five hits, while striking out four.

In the second game of the day, the Maroons faced off against St. Andrews. The Knights scored early, netting two runs in the first inning. Amber Madden hit a two RBI single up the middle, plating Brooke Sikes and Mary Cross, both scoring unearned runs. St. Andrews scored again in the second when Kori Ballard singled through the right side, allowing Jessie Wiegers to score from third base.

Roanoke earned its lone run in the bottom of the second inning. Emily Lawrence led off with a double to right field. She was followed by Sarah Groft, who added a double to left field, allowing Lawrence to score from second. After two innings, Roanoke trailed by two, 3-1. St. Andrews scored just one more time in the top of the fifth. Kori Ballard got an RBI after hitting the ball to the pitcher, getting out on the play, but allowing Kelsey Lee to cross the plate, taking a 4-1 lead. The Knights held Roanoke scoreless over the next three innings, as Roanoke fell 4-1 in game two of the day.

Sarah Groft was 2-3 with an RBI in the game, while Emily Lawrence was 1-3 with one run scored. Taylor Sutherland got Roanoke's fourth hit of the game, going 1-3 in the contest. Stephanie Clark was tabbed with the loss, giving up four runs while striking out an impressive 12 batters.

Amber Madden led the Knights, hitting 3-3, with two RBIs. Brook Sikes and Kori Ballard each tallied two hits on the day, as Sikes scored one run while Ballard had two RBIs. Kimberly Cook picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game, giving up four hits and striking out two.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, February 23rd as they face off against #3 Salisbury University and William Peace in the second day of the Triangle Classic. The first game is scheduled for 10:00 AM, while the second is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start.
