Softball Drops Two in Second Day of Beach Blast Tournament
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball team dropped two contests in the second day of the Beach Blast (In The Mountains) Tournament at the Moyer Complex. The Maroons fell to Kean University 9-4 in nine innings, as well as to Washington College 6-4. The Maroons now have an overall record of 4-6.

In the first game of the day, Roanoke trailed Kean early. Sandra Binkiewicz grounded into a double play, which allowed Megan Cegielski to score on the play, taking a 1-0 lead for Kean. Roanoke answered in the bottom of the fifth inning as Taylor Sutherland hit an RBI single to right field, plating Ellen Best. Rhea Schleicher as the next batter hit a two RBI triple to right field as well, scoring Sutherland and Autumn Hill. After the fifth inning, Roanoke led 3-1.

Kean tied the game in the top of the sixth, as Amanda Berezny hit a two RBI single, knotting the game up at 3-3. After the seventh inning came to a close with the teams tied at 3-3, the contest went into extra innings. Kean scored in the top of the eighth inning as Kelly Morehead singled down the left field line, scoring Emily Sabo on the play. Ronaoke facing defeat, tied the game in the bottom of the eighth, as Rhea Schleicher hit an RBI double plating Hill for the second time today. The Cougars, however, put up five unanswered runs in the top of the ninth inning, as Ronaoke fell to Kean 9-4 in the first game of the day.

Rhea Schleicher finished with two of Roanoke's five hits, while Taylor Sutherland, Alexis Roop and Autumn Hill had one hit apiece. Schleicher also finished with three of the team's four RBIs. Kelly Higbie was tabbed with the loss, giving up nine runs on 11 hits, striking out three in the effort.

Kean was led by Megan Cegielski and Amanda Berezny who tallied three hits each. Berezny also had three of the six team's RBIs. Courtney Yard earned the win, giving up four runs off of five hits, while striking out 11 batters.

In the second game of the day, Washington College scored in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Kylie Nottingham hit an RBI single that allowed Paige Briganti to score, as the Shorewomen took a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second inning, Roanoke tied the game with a walk of Rachel Guilliams, moving Maroons around the bases with Kelly Higbie ending up at home. After two innings, the teams were tied 1-1.

The Shorewomen reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third inning, as Kelsey Graham hit an RBI single, plating Kylie Nottingham. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Washington College extended its lead. Paige Briganti had a two RBI single to center field, while Caitlyn Kirby came in as the next batter and had a two RBI double of her won. After five innings, the Shorewomen led 6-1. With one out, Katie Romano hit a two RBI double for the Maroons, scoring Higbie and Stephanie Clark in the process. Gulliams also had an RBI single, moving Katie Romano around to home, but that would be the final run scored for the Maroons as Roanoke fell in the contest, 6-4.

Jenna Pendleton and Rachel Gulliams led the team with two hits each, while six different Maroons had one hit each. Katie Romano and Guilliams tallied two RBIs apiece, while Higbie led the team with two runs scored. Stephanie Clark was tabbed with the loss, giving up six runs off 10 hits in 4.2 innings pitched.

The Shorewomen were led by Claire Hofstedt, Claire Mattox and Caitlyn Kirby, who had two hits each. Paige Briganti and Caitlyn Kirby finished with two RBIs. Sydnee Schorr earned the win, pitching a complete game, giving up four runs off of 10 hits, while striking out seven batters.

The Maroons return to action on Friday, March 7th as they host the Roanoke College Softball Bash, playing Penn State Altoona, Mount Aloysius College and La Roche College. The first game is scheduled for a 11:00 AM Start.
