Maroons Topped by #21 Christopher Newport on Saturday
NEWPORT NEWS - The Roanoke College softball team ran into a tough #21 ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday, falling 9-4 and 13-5. The Maroons now have a record of 4-9.

Softballs were apparently not meant to stay on the field in the first five innings of the game, as four home runs were hit between the two teams during that span. Rhea Schleicher put the Maroons on the board first with a two RBI homer in the top of the third, scoring Taylor Sutherland and put the Maroons ahead 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth, the Captains' Kelsey Lewis hit a three run Home run to left field, scoring Stephanie Condenzio and Alexis Pope, pulling CNU ahead 3-2 after four innings.

Rhea Schleicher returned in the top of the fifth with her second home run in the game, this time a solo shot, tying the game at 3-3. Alexis Pope answered in the bottom of the fifth with a three run home run of her own, scoring Sabrina Hill and Kristina McLaughlin. The Captains added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 9-3 lead. The Maroons were able to score one more run as Schleicher made her way home after a fielding error. That would be the Maroons final run of the game as Roanoke fell 9-4 in game one.

Schleicher led the team going 3-3 in the game, scoring three runs and tallying three RBIs. Sarah Groft had two hits for the Maroons as well. Kelly Higbie pitched a complete game, striking out three batters.

Kristina McLaughlin, Sabrina Hill and Alexis Pope each finished with a team high three hits in the game. McLaughlin and Pope led the team with two runs each. Pope finished with four RBIs while Kelsey Lewis tallied three. Krista Lewis picked up the win, pitching five innings, striking out two.

In the second game, Christopher Newport put up seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. The inning included two home runs, one each from McLaughlin and Hill. The Captains also scored off two RBI singles and two errors. After the first inning, Roanoke trailed 7-0. The Captains would go on to score three more runs in the bottom of the second inning as well.

The Maroons scored their first runs in the top of the third. Kelly Higbie hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field, plating Taylor Sutherland. Stephanie Clark also hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring Schleicher for her fourth run of the day. The Maroons kept scoring in the top of the fourth as well. Rachel Gulliams hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Jordan Meador on the play. Schleicher picked up another RBI, this time on a walk, as Ashley Crouch scored with the bases loaded. Guilliams made her way home on a wild pitch as the Maroons scored their fifth run of the game, trailing 10-5 after four innings.

However, Sabrina hit a three run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting the Captains ahead by eight runs in the fifth inning, ending the contest in the process.

Five different Maroons finished with one hit each in the game, while five different players had one run apiece. Schleicher, Higbie, Clark and Guilliams tallied on RBI each. Stephanie Clark was tabbed with the loss in the contest.

Sabrina Hill led the Captains with three hits, scoring three runs and notching four RBIs. Hanah Marshal earned the win in the circle, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up five runs.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, March 16th as they take on Randolph-Macon in double-header action. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
