Maroons Split Twin Bill Against Randolph-Macon on Sunday
ASHLAND - The Roanoke College softball team split a pair of games on Sunday, winning game one 5-1, but falling in game two 8-4 to Randolph-Macon in ODAC action. The Maroons now have a record of 5-10, 1-2 in ODAC play, while the Yellow Jackets, who received votes in the latest NFCA poll, are 7-5, 1-3 in the ODAC.

In the first game, the Maroons started the contest with some of the same offensive play they had shown in Saturday's games. Rachel Guilliams hit a two run home run in the top of the second, plating Jordan Meador, giving Roanoke a 2-0 lead over Randolph-Macon.

The teams had a hard time finding the plate over the next three innings, until the Maroons came up to bat in the top of the sixth. Ashley Crouch hit an RBI double to center field scoring Stephanie Clark. Meador hit a sacrifice fly ball, allowing Katie Romano to score on the play. Taylor Sutherland followed two batters later to hit an RBI single to left field, bringing Crouch around to home. After six innings, Ronaoke led 5-0 over the Yellow Jackets. Randolph-Macon's Christa Simon hit an RBI single to let field, bringing home Amanda Sopko, and putting the Yellow Jackets only run on the board. Roanoke picked up the game one win over Randolph-Macon, 5-1.

Ashley Crouch led the Maroons going 2-3 in the game, scoring one run and notching one RBI. Five different Maroons scored one run each, while Rachel Guilliams tallied a team high two RBIs. Kelly Higbie pitched a complete game, giving up only run off seven hits and striking out two.

Christa Simon led the Yellow Jackets hitting 3-4 in the game, picking up three of the team's seven hits. Simon had the team's lone RBI, while Amanda Sopko had the team's only run of the game. Kelsey McLaughlin was tabbed with the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits in the complete game pitched.

Roanoke came out hot to start the second game as well. Taylor Sutherland reached home on a head up play on the base paths, advancing on a fielding error. Ashley Crouch as the next batter hit an single to right field, as Higbie advanced home from second base on an outfield error. Sarah Groft came up to the plate and hit an RBI single to center field, bringing around Clark for the Maroons third run of the inning. Randolph-Macon came back in the bottom of the fourth, as Carolyn Gilbertson reached on a fielder's choice, as Jenna Best scored on an infield error. After four innings, Roanoke led 3-1.

The Maroons scored on more run in the top of the fifth, as Jenna Pendleton doubled to left field, scoring Ashley Crouch on the play. Roanoke had built a 4-1 advantage through the top of the fifth. However, Randolph-Macon started to rally over the next two innings. Sam Moore hit a home run to center field to cut the deficit to two runs. The Yellow Jackets scored three more runs over the inning, now leading 5-4. They would go on to score three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 8-4 advantage. The Maroons couldn't cross the plate in the top of the seventh, as they fell to Randolph-Macon in game two.

Stephanie Clark went 3-4 in the second game, scoring one run. Four different Maroons crossed the plate in the contest, while Jenna Pendleton and Sarah Groft finished with one RBI each. Taylor Sutherland finished 2-3 with one run scored. Stephanie Clark was tabbed with the loss, giving up five runs, four of which were earned.

Katie Woody went 3-4, leading the Yellow Jackets in hits for the game. Christa Simon, Madison Gilman, Sharese Jarvis and Taylor Balmaz finished with two hits each. Jenna Best pitched a complete game, giving up four runs on 10 hits.

The Maroons return to action on Thursday, March 20th as they play Guilford College in an early afternoon ODAC contest. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:30 PM.
