Softball Tops Guilford College 7-1 on Thursday
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball team defeated Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent Guilford College on Thursday afternoon, 7-1. The Maroons now have a record of 6-10, 2-2 in the ODAC, while the Quakers sit with a mark of 19-3, 2-2 in ODAC play.

The contest was played as a make-up, to a game that was supposed to take place in Greensboro. Because of that, despite being at their home field, the Maroons batted first in the game. The Maroons jumped out to a 3-0 lead early on the Quakers. Stephanie Clark hit an RBI single to right field, bringing Rhea Schleicher around to score on the play. Three batters later, Alexis Roop hit a two RBI single to left, scoring Clark and Kelly Higbie, giving Roanoke the three-run advantage to start the afternoon.

Roanoke added one more run in the top of the third, as Clark hit a solo home run to left field. Scoring was scarce over the next three innings until Guilford's Rachel Howard hit an RBI double to left field in the bottom of the sixth. Her two-base hit scored Cynthia Hayes, and pulled the Quakers within three, 4-1.

The Maroons didn't take long to score again, as the top of the seventh was successful for Roanoke. Sarah Groft bunted fro an RBI single, plating Katie Romano. Later in the inning, Schleicher hit a two RBI double straight away to center field, as Rachel Guilliams and Groft crossed the plate. Those would be the final runs of the game as Roanoke picked up the conference victory, 7-1 over Guilford College.

The Maroons had four players who tallied two hits apiece: Rhea Schleicher, Stephanie Clark, Ashley Crouch, and Alexis Roop. Clark led the team by crossing the plate twice, as well as tying for a team high two RBIs with Schleicher and Roop. Higbie pitched the complete game, giving up just one run off six hits, while striking out six.

Guilford was led by Marty Wilcox who finished the game with two hits. Four other Quakers tallied one hit each. Cynthia Hayes scored the lone run for the team, while Rachel Howard finished with the team's only RBI. Maggie Shaffer was tabbed with the loss, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up four runs off eight hits.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, March 26th as they take on Eastern Mennonite University at the Moyer Complex. The double header is slated for a first pitch at 5:00 PM.
