Maroons Fall to Emory on Softball Alumni Day
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball team ran up against a tough #16 ranked Emory University on a rainy Saturday afternoon, falling in the contest 15-1. The Maroons now have a record of 6-11 overall while the Eagles sit with a mark of 27-6.

The day also served as Softball Alumni Day as the Roanoke College softball program and the Maroons Club welcomed back former members of the RC softball team. After the contest was over, the Maroon Club unveiled new signage out at the Moyer Complex, recognizing field four as the home of Roanoke College softball. The signs along the first and third base lines, as well as the outfield walls display the program's eight ODAC Championships, nine NCAA Tournament appearances, three NCAA Championship Series appearances, five All-Americans and an NFCA Coaching Staff of the Year honor. After the ceremony, the softball alumni were treated to food provided by All Sports Café in Salem.

Emory jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs in the frame. Ally Kersthold scored on an error for the first run of the game. Claire Bailey crossed the plate after an RBI sacrifice fly ball from Micah Scharff. The final run came as Megan Light scored off of an RBI single from Moira Sullivan.

The Eagles broke away from the Maroons in the top of the second, as Megan Light and Scharff each hit a three run home run in the inning. Claire Bailey added a two RBI single, as Emory put up eight runs in the second inning. Roanoke's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth as Jordan Meador scored on an infield out with the bases loaded. After four innings, Roanoke trailed 11-1. The Eagles capped off the game with a grand slam from Scharff, as Emory picked up the 15-1 win.

Roanoke finished with five hits on the day, led by Rhea Schleicher who tallied two. Katie Romano, Jordan Meador and Sarah Groft each tallied one hit apiece. Taylor Sutherland had the team's lone RBI on the afternoon. Kelly Higbie was tabbed with the loss, giving up nine runs. Stephanie Clark came in during the second inning and went on to strike out five batters.

Emory tallied 12 hits in the contest, with three players finishing with two each. Micah Scharff went 2-3 on the day with two runs scored and eight RBIs. Megan Light also had a 2-3 afternoon, scoring three runs with three RBIs. Amanda Kardys pitched the complete game, giving up one run, while striking out seven batters.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, March 30th as they take on Bridgewater College at the Moyer Complex. The double header is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
