Softball Splits Pair With Bridgewater
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball team split a pair of games with Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent Bridgewater College on Monday. Roanoke won the first game 4-3, while falling in the second 3-2. The Maroons now have a record of 7-12, 3-3 in the ODAC, while the Eagles sit with a mark of 12-5, 4-3 in ODAC play.

Roanoke jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in game number one. Kelly Higbie hit an RBI single to center field, allowing Taylor Sutherland to score on the play. The Maroons extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning as well. Higbie hit another RBI single to center field, plating Sutherland again. Emily Lawrence followed up with an RBI single of her own to center, bringing home Stephanie Clark. After three innings, Roanoke led 3-0.

Bridgewater started to come back in the top of the fourth inning as Samantha Fridley hit a solo home run, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1. The Eagles were at it again in the top of the sixth as Brianna Cox hit an RBI single to left field, plating Kasey Anderson. Bridgewater tied the game after Brooke Throckmorton singled to right field, bringing home Lauren Jenkins to knot the game at 3-3. In the bottom of the seventh with the game still tied, Rhea Schleicher started the inning with a single to right field. She proceeded to steal second base and advance to third on a throwing error. After Higbie walked during her plate appearance, Schleicher scored on a passed ball during the next at bat to capture the game for the Maroons, 4-3.

Kelly Higbie and Stephanie Clark led the Maroons in hits, each going 2-3 in game one. Higbie led the team in RBIs with two, while Taylor Sutherland finished with a team high two runs. Higbie (5-6) pitched the complete game giving up just three runs off six hits, while striking out one.

The Eagles had six different batters with one hit each. Kasey Anderson, Lauren Jenkins and Samantha Fridley accounted for all three of Bridgewater's runs during the game. Brianna Cox (6-3) was tabbed with the loss after giving up four runs off nine hits, striking out two.

The Maroons had a tougher time against Bridgewater in game number two. Bridgewater's Brianna Cox started the top of the first with an RBI single to left field, bringing around Kasey Anderson to score, taking a 1-0 lead early. Roanoke answered to take the lead on its own after Jordan Meador hit a two run home run, scoring Stephanie Clark as well. After two innings, Roanoke led 2-1.

In the top of the sixth, Anderson scored her second run of the game on a throwing error, tying the game at 2-2. In the same inning Brooke Throckmorton hit an RBI single to right field, bringing around Samantha Fridley for the eventual game winning run.

Roanoke was held to three hits in the second game, one each from Taylor Sutherland, Stephanie Clark and Jordan Meador. Meador led the team with two RBIs after her home run, while also tying in runs with Clark (1). Clark (2-5) was given the loss after giving up three runs off four hits, while striking out two.

Bridgewater only had one more hit than Roanoke, tallying four in the game. Brianna Cox picked up two RBIs in the game while Kasey Anderson crossed the plate twice for the Eagles. Amanda Lutz (5-1) won the game, giving up two runs off three hits, striking out one.

The Maroons return to action on Thursday, April 3rd as they travel to Emory to take on Emory & Henry. The first game of the double header is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
