Softball Splits Pair With Averett in Non-Conference Doubleheader
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball team split a pair of games with Averett University on Wednesday afternoon.  The Maroons now have a record of 11-16, while the Cougars sit with a mark of 25-11.

The Maroons had a hard time getting the bats around in the first game against the Cougars, falling 6-0.  The Cougars put up one run each in the first, fourth and sixth innings.  Averett tallied three runs in the seventh inning as Jessye Crews hit an RBI single to left field, and Jessica Long hit a two run home run to give Averett the 6-0 victory in game one.

Sarah Groft led the Maroons in hits with two during the first game, tallying half of the team's hit total.  Stephanie Clark (4-7) was tabbed with the loss, giving up six runs, while striking out four batters.

Mary Beth Smith and Amy Hamlett led the Cougars with two hits apiece, while six different players crossed the plate to score.  Jessica Long led the team with three RBIs.  Smith also pitched the complete game shut out, giving up four hits and striking out 12 batters.

The Maroons fared better in the second game against the Cougars.  Though, Averett did get on the board first after runs in the top of the second and third innings, taking a 2-0 lead after three innings.  Roanoke scored their first runs of the day in the bottom of the fourth as Rhea Schleicher hit a three run home run, plating Stephanie Clark and Taylor Sutherland.  Roanoke claimed the 3-2 lead after four innings.  Averett scored one more run in the top of the fifth, tying the game at 3-3, after Taylor Dix scored off of a fielding error.

Roanoke spend the bottom of the sixth building a lead in the next last inning.  Emily Lawrence hit a two RBI single down the right field line, scoring Ana Arriaga and Schleicher.  Kaci Frick grounded out on a play also netted her two RBIs, as Roanoke led 7-3 after the sixth inning.  That lead would hold for the Maroons as Roanoke was victorious in the second game.
