Softball Falls in ODAC Doubleheader Against Lynchburg
SALEM - Roanoke dropped two games to Lynchburg, who is currently second in the ODAC, 1-0 (8 inn.) and 4-3 on Sunday afternoon.  The Maroons now have a record of 11-18, 6-10 in the ODAC, while the Hornets are 23-11, 11-5 in ODAC play.
 
The first game of the double header, proved to be a pitcher's duel, as both pitchers only gave up five total hits in regulation with no runs scored.  Through the first seven innings, neither team had an inning with more than four at-bats.  Lynchburg's winning run came with runners on first and third as Melanie Tenney reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Lauren Smith to score from third.  Lynchburg won the first game 1-0 in eight innings.
 
Roanoke's three hits came from Taylor Sutherland, Rhea Schleicher  and Sarah Groft, all of which were singles.  Kelly Higbie (7-12) was tabbed with the loss after eight innings, giving up just one run and striking out one.
 
Jessi Hall had two of three hits for the Hornets, with the other coming from Nicole Riley.  Hope Johnson (7-5) earned the complete game shutout, throwing eight innings and striking out nine batters.
 
Lynchburg opened the scoring in the second game, as Nicole Shipp hit a bases loaded single up the middle in the second, scoring Kayla St. John from third.  St. John returned favor with an RBI single to center field in the top of the third, plating Melanie Tenney.  After three innings, Lynchburg led 2-0.  Roanoke responded in the bottom of the fourth as Stephanie Clark hit an RBI double to the outfield, scoring Taylor Sutherland.  Kelly Higbie also had an RBI single to center field, plating Clark on the play.  After four innings, the teams were tied at 2-2.
 
Lynchburg mirrored Roanoke's play in the top of the fifth with a pair of RBI singles, to reclaim the two run, 4-2 lead.  Roanoke didn't score in the fifth, but Sarah Groft hit a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to pull within one, 4-3.  However, that would be the final run of the game as Roanoke fell in game two, 4-3.
 
Stephanie Clark led the Maroons in hits with two, while Rhea Schleicher, Kelly Higbie, Sarah Groft  and Ashley Crouch tallied one apiece.  Clark, Higbie and Groft also all tallied one RBI apiece.  Higbie also pitched the complete game in game two, giving up four runs off 11 hits, striking out two.
 
Nicole Ship had a team high three hits in the second game, while three different Hornets scored one run each.  Amber Ingram (12-3) pitched the complete game, giving up three runs and striking out eight in the win.
 
The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, April 15th as they host Eastern Mennonite University for a double header.  The first game is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
