Softball Drops Two To Eastern Mennonite on Thursday
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball team fell in two games to Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent Eastern Mennonite University on Thursday evening, 2-1 and 3-2.  The Maroons now have a record of 11-22, 6-12 in the ODAC, while the Royals are 15-16-1, 7-9-1 in ODAC play.

Runs were scarce in the first game, as neither team was able to cross the plate in the first five innings.  EMU put up the first run of the game in the top of the sixth, as with two runners on, an infield out by Maria Foltz allowed Molly Smith to score the first run of the game.  Roanoke waited until the bottom of the seventh to tie the game as Sarah Groft led off with a solo home run, tying the game at 1-1.

This would be the only run for the Maroons in the first seven innings, leading the two teams to extra innings.  With Foltz starting out on second in the top of the eighth, Aislinn Lucas tallied a hit that move Foltz over to third.  Again, after an infield out, Foltz crossed the plate for what would be the final run of the game, with the Royals taking game one, 2-1.

Roanoke tallied seven hits in the first game, with Katie Romano going 2-3 in the game.  Sarah Groft was 1-2 with a home run, one run scored and an RBI.  Kelly Higbie gave up just two runs of six hits, striking out three batters in the first game of the day.

Eastern Mennonite had just six hits in the game, with Aislinn Lucas going 3-3 on the day.  Brooke Hensley also tallied two hits.

The Royals started the scoring in the second game in the top of the third, as Jordan Aylor hit an RBI single, plating Nicolette Cuevas on the play.  After three, EMU led 1-0.  The Royals scored again in the top of the fourth as well, with Cuevas hitting an RBI single of her own, bringing around Aislinn Lucas to score the second run of the game.  In the top of the fifth, Foltz had an RBI single of her own, scoring EMU's third, taking a 3-0 lead on the Maroons.

Roanoke got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as Jenna Pendleton hit a sacrifice fly ball to center field, allowing Kelly Higbie to score on the play.  Roanoke tallied another run in the bottom of the seventh, when Taylor Sutherland scored on a wild pitch.  However, that would be the Maroons' final run of the game as EMU picked up the 3-2 win in game two.

Roanoke finished with six hits in the game, tallied by six different batters in the game.  Taylor Sutherland and Kelly Higbie finished the game with one run each, while Jenna Pendleton had the team's only RBI.  Stephanie Clark pitched the complete game, giving up three runs off 10 hits, striking out six batters.

The Royals were led by Brooke Sigrist, Jordan Aylor and Nicolette Cuevas who each tallied two hits apiece.  Cara Neikirk pitched the complete gam, giving up two runs off six hits, while striking out three batters.

The Maroons return to action on April 18th as they take on Virginia Wesleyan in double header ODAC action.  The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM
