Softball Drops Two Games In Season Opener Double Header
ATLANTA, GA - The Roanoke College softball team dropped a pair of contests in the 3n2 classic hosted by Emory University on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons fell 6-0 to #16 Emory University, as well as taking a loss to Birmingham-Southern, 10-2. Roanoke starts the season with a record of 0-2.

#16 Emory scored two runs in the first inning of the game. Alyssa Pollard scored off of a Hannah Sendel to score the first run of the contest. Sendel was on the other end of the favor a few batters later as she scored as Tara Fallahee reached on an error. The Ealges scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Brianna Berceau hit a three RBI double. Emory would plate one more run in the bottom of the sixth as Berceau scored off of a Pollard single. Roanoke was held to just one hit in the contest.

Taylor Sutherland reached base twice for the Maroons on walks, while Sarah Groft got the lone hit in the contest for Roanoke. Kelly Higbie pitched the first five innings of the game, striking out two batters while giving up five hits. Sarah Groft played the remainder of the contest, striking out one batter and giving up one run.

Emory finished the game with six hits, with six different players attaining one hit apiece. Brianna Berceau led the Eagles in RBIs, finishing with three to add to her two hits and one run scored. Sydney Carpenter pitched for six complete innings, striking out 11 batters and giving up one hit.

Roanoke also ran into a tough opponent in Birmingham Southern. The Panthers put up one run in the first inning, and scored two runs in the third off of a two RBI double by Torrie Garner. The biggest inning for the Panthers came in the top of the fourth, as they scored six runs over the inning. The first four runs were scored with the bases loaded, and batters reaching base on walks or errors. Taylor Bassett hit an RBI double to score the final two runs of the inning for Birmingham Southern.

In the bottom of the inning, Roanoke put a couple of runs up on the board. Becca Wenger hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Rhea Schleicher, and notching the first run for Roanoke in the 2015 season. Rachel Guilliams reached first on an error, which allowed Taylor Carter to score from third. After four innings, Roanoke trailed 9-2. In the top of the sixth, BSC's Amanda Ballew hit an RBI single to center field, plating Micaela Beck and taking an eight run advantage. The Maroons were unable to cross the plate in the bottom of the sixth, as the Cougars picked up the 10-2 win after six innings.

Roanoke finished the game with four hits, led by Katie Smith with two of her own. Smth went 2-3 on the day, while Rhea Schleicher and Becca Wenger each had 1-3 afternoons. Wenger had the lone RBI for the team, while Schleicher and Taylor Carter had one run each. Ruthie Williams (0-1) pitched a full six innings, giving up 10 runs off eight hits.

The Cougars were led in hitting by Micaela Beck, who went 2-4 with two runs scored. Six other players for BSC finished with one hit apiece. Beck and Bethany Fronk each tallied two runs, while Statham, Garner and Bassett had two RBIs each. Bethany Fronk (1-1) picked up the win in six innings, giving up two runs off four hits, while striking out six.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, March 1st as they will play both Emory and Birmingham Southern one more time. The first game will be against BSC at 10:00 AM, followed by a Noon contest against Emory.
