Softball Falls To Unbeaten Averett in Sunday Contests
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball team dropped a pair of games to Averett University, 6-3 and 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Maroons now have a record of 3-7, while the Cougars are 18-0-1.

Averett is currently on a 15 game win streak, but the Maroons have the Cougars a run in the first game. Despite the loss, Roanoke outhit Averett 9-6 in the first game of the day.

The Cougars came out of the gate with four runs in the first inning. Samantha Hall started with a bunt single, which allowed Jessica Long to score on a throwing error. Hall eventually scored on a wild pitch, while Taylor Dix and Jessica Griffin each scored after being walked in. Averett scored one more run in the bottom of the second after Emily Dunford hit a bases loaded ground out to second, which brought around Laura Young. After two innings, Roanoke trailed 5-0.

Roanoke started to chip away at the deficit, as Katie Smith hit a sacrifice fly ball in the top of the third, bringing around Taylor Carter to score the Maroons' first run. The Maroons scored again in the top of the fourth, as Jenna Pendleton hit a single up the middle of the infield to score Becca Wenger, advancing home on a throwing error. In the next inning, Taylor Sutherland grounded out in the infield to the short stop, but it allowed Taylor Carter to score the Maroons third run, as Roanoke now trailed 5-3. However, the final run of the game would come in the bottom of the inning, as Dunford crossed the plate for Averett on a wild pitch, taking a 6-3 lead over the Maroons. Roanoke got runners on in the final two innings, leaving five runners on total in the last two frames. However, the Cougar defense kept the Maroons from crossing the plate.

Taylor Carter and Becca Wenger led the Maroons in hitting, putting up two hits apiece. Five other Maroons finished the game with one hit each. Taylor Sutherland and Katie Smith earned one RBI each, while Carter led the team with two of the squad's three runs scored. Kelly Higbie was tabbed with the loss in the first game, giving up four runs early. Ruthie Williams came in for relief and struck out two batters, while giving uip two runs off four hits.

Averett scored six runs off six hits in the first game. Taylor Dix was the only Cougar with a multi-hit game in the first contest, tallying two. Emily Dunford, Rhyan Scearce and Jessye Crews all had one RBI apiece. Amy Hamlett earned the win with 2.1 innings of work. She allowed two runs off four hits. Jessica Griffin got the save with 2.2 innings pitched, three strikeouts and three hits allowed.

In the second game, Averett put up three runs in the first inning, starting with an RBI double from Taylor Dix, scoring Jessica Long. Meredith Rudisill hit a single through the left side two batters later, to notch two RBIs as Dix and Emily Dunford scored on the play. The Cougars scored one more run in the bottom of the forth as Dix reached on a fielding error, plating Long and scoring the fourth run of the game.

The Maroons were led by Rhea Schleicher in the second contest, who went 2-3 on the game. Roanoke's three other hits came from Taylor Carter, Katie Smith and Becca Wenger, who had one hit apiece. Kelly Higbie was tabbed with the loss in the second game, giving up four runs off six hits, while striking out two.

The Cougars finished with six hits in the second game, led by Jessica Long with two. Emily Dunford, Taylor Dix, Amy Hamlett and Meredith Rudisill had one each as well. Rudisill finished with two of the team's three RBIs. Mary Beth Smith earned the win, giving up no runs on five hits, while striking out nine batters.
The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, March 17th as they play host to Greensboro College in Roanoke's first home games of the season. That contest is slated for a 5:00 PM first pitch.
