Softball Sweeps Greensboro in Double-Header on Tuesday
SALEM - The Roanoke College softball team swept Greensboro College in a pair of games on Tuesday, winning 5-1 and 5-4. The Maroons now have a record of 5-7, while the Pride has an overall season record of 9-7.

In the first game of the day, Roanoke held Greensboro scoreless for the first six innings of the game. The Maroons scored one run in the bottom of the second inning, as Rachel Guilliams hit an RBI single to center field, allowing Samantha Baldwin to cross the plate for a 1-0 lead. Baldwin scored again for the Maroons as she hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, extending Roanoke's lead to two runs.

Roanoke's biggest inning came in the bottom of the fifth. Jordan Meador hit an RBI single to center field, bringing around Taylor Carter to score. After Katie Smith hit a single to center field, Kelly Higbie followed with a single to center field of her own, plating Meador. The final run of the inning came as Rhea Schleicher hit a single to the outfield, scoring Smith. After five Innings, Roanoke led 5-0. Greensboro's lone run came in the top of the seventh, when Hayley Rumle hit a single with the bases loaded, bringing around Evan Sherer to score. Roanoke went on to win the first game, 5-1.

Roanoke finished the first game with nine hits. Katie Smith led the Maroons in hitting, going 2-3 on the afternoon. Samantha Baldwin crossed the plate twice, while Carter, Meador and Smith had one run each. Five different Maroons finished the game with one RBI. Kelly Higbie (3-5) pitched the complete game, giving up just one run off eight hits, while striking out three batters.

The Maroons put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning, putting together a strong start in game number two. Katie Smith and Taylor Carter went on a double steal to score the first run of the game, as Carter crossed the plate in the effort. With two runners on, Becca Wenger hit a single to right center field, picking up an RBI by scoring Smith on the play. Sarah Groft followed with a single to left, bringing around Ruthie Williams to score. Jordan Meador capped the scoring in the inning by hitting a double to right center field, plating Wenger, and giving the Maroons a 4-0 lead after the first inning.

Roanoke's lead was short lived though, as Hayley Rumie hit a grand slam in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 4-4. Both teams went scoreless for the next four innings, until a big play from Taylor Carter. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Carter hit a solo home run over the left field fence to give Roanoke a 5-4 advantage entering the final frame. Greensboro put two runners on in the top of the inning, but Roanoke kept the Pride from tying the game, as Roanoke won 5-4 in game two.

Roanoke finished with six hits in the contest, one each from six different players. Carter led the Maroons in runs, crossing the plate twice in the game. Carter, Becca Wenger, Sarah Groft and Jordan Meador all tallied one RBI apiece. Ruthie Williams pitched a complete game as well for the Maroons, giving up just four runs off seven hits, while striking out two.

Greensboro tallied seven hits, including two from Alexis Hall, Madiscon Crisco and Hayley Rumley. Rumley led all players with four RBIs, coming from her grand slam in the second. Lauren Miller was tabbed with the loss, giving up one run off three hits, striking out four.

The Maroons return to action on Thursday, March 19th as they host Southern Virginia at the Moyer Complex. That doubleheader is scheduled for a 5:00 PM first pitch.
