Softball Snaps Emory & Henry's 10-Game Win Streak
EMORY - The Roanoke College softball team split a pair of contests with Emory & Henry on Tuesday afternoon. Roanoke won the first game 12-0 in five innings, but fell in the second game, 2-1. The Maroons are now 7-9, 2-2 in the ODAC, while the Wasps are 11-1, 3-1 in ODAC play.

Roanoke's 12-0, five-inning win over Emory & Henry snapped the Wasps 10 game win streak. Emory & Henry was undefeated entering the contest, but Roanoke handed its opponent its first loss of the season.

In the first game of the day, Roanoke put up four runs in the top of the first inning. With two runners on, Katie Smith hit a double down the left field line, scoring Taylor Sutherland and Taylor Carter for a 2-0 advantage. Kelly Higbie picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Katie Smith and gave the Maroons a 3-0 lead. Rachel Guilliams reached after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing around Becca Wenger for the fourth run of the game.

Roanoke scored just one in the second inning as Kelly Higbie reached on a dropped fly ball, bringing home Katie Smith on the play. Higbie picked up another two RBIs in the top of the third, as she hit a single to left center, plating Sutherland and Carter. Marleigh Hall hit her second three-RBI home run in two games, giving Roanoke a 10-0 lead after three innings.

Taylor Carter also hit a home run for the Maroons in the top of the fourth, taking a 11-0 lead for Roanoke. Rhea Schleicher hit an RBI single through the right field line, scoring Hall and the 12th run of the game. The Maroons held off the Wasps defensively, ending the game after just five innings.

Taylor Sutherland led the Maroons in hitting in the first game, going 4-4 with two runs scored. Taylor Carter hit 3-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Kelly Higbie was 1-3 with three RBIs and one run scored. Marleigh Hall also had three RBIs, hitting 1-2 with two runs scored and a home run. Kelly Higbie pitched the complete five inning game, striking out six batters and giving up just two hits.

Jordan Chrisley and Taylor Doss had one hit each for the Wasps in the contest. Taylor Banner was tabbed with the loss, giving up nine runs off 10 hits.

The second game was a much closer one for the two teams. Roanoke and Emory & Henry went scoreless for the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, the Wasps tallied two runs. Alyssa Clark hit an RBI single to center field, plating Riley Pudney for the first run of the game. Jordan Chrisley hit a single of her own through the left side, scoring Clark and taking a 2-0 lead. Roanoke's only run came in the top of the fifth as Rhea Schleicher hit a solo home run to left center field. The Maroons would end up falling 2-1 in the game.

Roanoke had four hits in the second game, with Smith, Baldwin, Schleicher and Guilliams all tallying one apiece. Higbie was tabbed with the loss, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up two runs off seven hits.

Jordan Chrisley, Riley Pudney and Alyssa Clark all had two hits for the Wasps, leading the team in the category. Chrisley and Clark also finished with one RBI each. Brandy Bryant pitched the complete game giving up one run off of four hits, while striking out five.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, March 28th as they host Lynchburg College for doubleheader action. The first game is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
