Softball Sweeps Sweet Briar on Sunday
SWEET BRIAR - The Roanoke College softball team held Sweet Briar scoreless in two Old Dominion Athletic Conference matchups on Sunday. The Maroons are now 10-10 on the season, 5-3 in ODAC play, while the Vixens are 2-14, 0-10 in the ODAC.

The Maroons defeated the Vixens 4-0 in game one. Roanoke's first two runs came in the top of the first inning, as Taylor Sutherland hit an RBI single, bringing home Taylor Carter. Marleigh Hall then stole second base, allowing the distraction to let Katie Smith cross home plate. The two teams went scoreless for the next five innings, until the Maroons scored again in the top of the sixth inning. Mattie Morris reached first on an error and advanced to second on an error. This play let Rhea Schleicher score the third run of the game. The next batter, Rachel Guilliams hit an RBI double bringing around Morris for the final run.

Rhea Schleicher led the Maroons in hits with two in the first game of the day. Seven other Maroons tallied one hit apiece. Katie Smith, Taylor Carter, Schleicher and Mattie Morris all finished with one run scored. Carter and Schleicher each had two stolen bases, while Taylor Sutherland and Marleigh Hall had one each. Kelly Higbie picked up the win, throwing six innings, giving up five hits and striking out 12 batters.

Amanda Terry, Hollie Halford, Kayla Dooms, Nene Jones and Tosha Brown all finished the game with one hit each. Cynthia Schuch was tabbed with the loss, giving up four runs off nine hits, while striking out two.

Roanoke defeated Sweet Briar 8-0 in five innings during the second game. The Maroons scored one run in the bottom of the first. Ruthie Williams hit an RBI single in the first, scoring Sarah Groft and the first run of the game. Groft hit a two RBI double in the top of the second, plating Autumn Hill and Hannah McDaniel. Groft would later score on an error, giving the Maroons a 4-0 lead after two innings.

Jenna Pendleton hit a RBI double in the top of the third, plating Williams. McDaniel added another two RBI double, allowing Jenna Pendleton and Emily Lawrence to score for a 7-0 advantage. Baldwin capped off the Maroon scoring in the top of the fourth, by hitting an RBI double plating Groft and taking a 8-0 advantage.

Sarah Groft led the Maroons in hitting in the second contest, going 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Samantha Baldwin, Ruthie Williams, Jenna Pendleton and Hannah McDaniel all finished the game with two hits each. Five maroons also scored one run apiece. Ruthie Williams pitched five innings, giving up three hits, no runs and striking out four.

Sweet Briar's hits came from Amanda Terry, Molly Langford and Cynthia Schuh, tallying one apiece. Molly Langford was tabbed with the loss, giving up eight runs off 12 hits.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, April 1st as they play host to Randolph College in double-header action. That contest is scheduled for a 5:00 PM game one.
