Roanoke on Six Game Win Streak, Defeat Randolph-Macon Twice on Saturday
ROANOKE - The Roanoke College softball team defeated Randolph-Macon in a doubleheader on Saturday winning 2-1 and 1-0. The Maroons are now 14-10, 9-3 in the ODAC, while the Yellow Jackets are 12-8, 6-6 in conference play.

The Maroons have won their last six consecutive games, sweeping Randolph-Macon, Sweet Briar and Randolph. With their current winning streak, the Maroons have moved into third place in the ODAC, behind #11 Virginia Wesleyan and Lynchburg, who the Maroons split with on March 28th.

Randolph-Macon put up the first run in the bottom of the first inning, as Madison Gilman hit a sacrifice ground out to the pitcher, allowing Sierra Ford to score. The Yellow Jackets held off the Maroons until the sixth inning, when Katie Smith hit an RBI single to left field, bringing in Taylor Carter, tying the game at 1-1. Roanoke made a statement in the top of the seventh, as Becca Wenger led off with a solo home run to right center field, to claim a 2-1 advantage. Roanoke faced just four batters in the bottom of the inning as the Maroons picked up the game one, 2-1 win.

Roanoke finished with five hits in the first game, led by Wenger with two. Wenger and Smith had one RBI each. Taylor Carter, Smith and Samantha Baldwin all had one hit apiece. Kelly Higbie pitched the complete game, striking out six batters in the win.

Randolph-Macon had three hits, two from Sierra Ford and one from Sharese Jarvis. Nelda Bagley was tabbed with the loss, giving up two runs off five hits. She, however, struck out 11 Maroon batters in the loss.

It was a low scoring affair in the second contest, as Roanoke picked up the win 1-0. The winning run came in the top of the sixth inning. Higbie led off with a single, and was advanced to second on a ground out. Sarah Groft hit a double to left field, bringing around the Roanoke pitcher to score the only run needed in the 1-0 victory.

Roanoke finished the game with nine hits, led by Taylor Carter, Katie Smith and Sarah Groft with two each. Higbie pitched her second complete game of the day, striking out five batters while giving up three hits.

The Yellow Jackets tallied just three hits, two again from Sierra Ford, while Skylar Toth finished with one. Kelsey McLaughlin picked up the loss, pitching five innings, giving up seven hits and one run.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, April 7th as they play host to Bridgewater College at the Moyer Complex. That doubleheader is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start.
