Higbie Sets All-Time Career Strikeouts Record Against Va. Wesleyan on Saturday
VIRGINIA BEACH - Kelly Higbe struck out five batters to set the all-time Roanoke College career strikeout record, as the Maroons fell in two games to #5 Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday. The Maroons now have a record of 16-12, 11-5 in the ODAC, while the Marlins are 28-4, 18-2.

With her five strikeouts on Saturday, Higbie has set the new all-time career strikeouts record with 367 strikeouts over her career. The senior from Midlothian, VA surpassed the record previously held by Lyndsi Craig '07, who had 363 strikeouts in just three seasons. Higbie has put together 66 strikeouts this season, and had a season high 141 during her freshman season in which she pitched 261.1 innings. Higbie ranks in the top five in numerous categories in the ODAC this season, including: Wins (10 - 4th), shutouts (5 - 2nd), complete games (12 - 3rd), ERA (1.87 - 6th), and strikeouts (66 - 5th).

The #5 ranked Marlins topped the Maroons 3-0 in the first game. Courtney Bogan scored on a wild pitch in the first inning, while Kristina Karagiorgia flied out to second base, allowing Liz Bailey to cross the plate in the second. The final run came in the bottom of the fifth as Cassety Howerin hit an RBI single, plating Sami Pearce for the 3-0 win

The Maroons were only allowed two hits in the first game, both coming from Rachel Guilliams. Higbie pitched the complete six innings, giving up three runs off six hits, while striking out three batters.

The Marlins finished with six hits, led by Courtney Bogan with two, going 2-3 with one run scored. Howerin, Kayla Dost, Bailey and Karagiorgia each finished with one hit. Karagiorgis also picked up the win, giving up two hits and striking out nine.

The Marlins jumped on the Maroons early in the second game. Virginia Wesleyan scored two runs in the bottom of the third, as Howertin hit an RBI single scoring Bogan, followed by a sacrifice fly ball by Dost to plate Kayla Malkos for a 2-0 lead. The Marlins scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as well.

Roanoke's first runs of the day came in the top of the sixth. Katie Smith hit an RBI single with two runners on, as Taylor Carter came around to score. Marleigh Hall had an RBI after hitting a ground out to third, as Taylor Sutherland made her way home to score. The Marlins plated one more run in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the 6-2 win.

Roanoke finished with five hits, led by Taylor Carter and Katie Smith with two hits each. Autumn Hill had the fifth hit for the Maroons. Smith and Hall each finished with one RBI, while Carter added a stolen base to the mix. Higbie pitched 3.1 innings and was tabbed with the loss. She struck out two batters. Ruthie Williams pitched the remainder of the game and struck out four batters.

The Marlins scored six runs off eight hits. Courtney Bogan went 3-3 with one run and two RBIs. Mary Shipp pitched the complete game and struck out six batters.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, April 19th as they travel to take on Guilford College. The first game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
