Softball Sweeps Guilford College on Tuesday
GREENSBORO, NC - The Roanoke College softball team swept Guilford College on Tuesday evening, 5-4 and 6-2, in the Maroons penultimate matchup of the regular season. The Maroons now have a record of 18-12, 13-5 in ODAC play, while the Quakers are 23-15, 11-9 in the ODAC.

The Maroons are set for the ODAC Tournament, which will begin on Friday, April 24th. They will still have one more doubleheader in the regular season as they take on Bridgewater College on Wednesday, in a contest that has been rescheduled on a number of occasions. With those as the final two teams in left to play, Roanoke is locked into the #3 seed in the ODAC Tournament. As the schedule stands now, Roanoke would open up in a 2:00 PM game against Emory & Henry on Field 3 at the Moyer Complex.

Roanoke and Guilford both scored one run each in the first inning. Kelly Higbie had an RBI ground out which brought home Taylor Carter, while Guilford's Larua Hall scored on a passed ball. In the top of the second, Taylor Carter reached on a throwing error, allowing Becca Wenger to score an unearned run. Guilford's Marty Wilcox hit an RBI double in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2. Roanoke scored a run in the top of the fourth, as Taylor Carter hit an RBI single to left field, plating Rhea Schleicher. The Quakers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 4-3 advantage. However, it was Wenger who hit a two run bomb over the right center field wall, claiming the lead for the Maroons, which eventually led to a 5-4 win.

Taylor Carter, Becca Wenger and Rhea Schleicher all had two hits in the first game, with Wenger leading the team with two runs scored and two RBIs. Kelly Higbie pitched the complete game and struck out four batters. Carter and Rachel Guilliams each notched one stolen base apiece.

The Quakers were led in hitting by Casey Snead and Shelby Helms, each tallying two hits. Marty Wilcox had the team's lone RBI. Maggie Shaffer was tabbed with the loss, giving up two runs off four hits.

Guilford hopped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Rachel Howard hit an RBI single up the middle, followed by Wilcox who reached on an error, plating Caroline Barnette. After the first, it was all Roanoke. With the bases loaded, Jordan Meador got hit by a pitch which advanced all the runners, with Samantha Baldwin scoring. Rachel Guilliams then hit a two RBI single to center field, bringing home Schleicher and Ruthie Williams for a 3-2 lead. In the top of the fourth, Rachel Guilliams hit a sacrifice fly ball, scoring Schleicher again. In the top of the sixth, Hannah McDaniel hit a single to left field which scored Carter and Guilliams, as Roanoke won game two 6-2.

Roanoke finished with 11 hits, with Ruthie Williams, Rhea Schleicher and Rachel Guilliams leading the team with two hits each. Schleicher scored two of the six runs for the Maroons, while Guilliams had three of the team's five RBIs. Ruthie Williams earned the win by giving up two runs off three hits, striking out two.

The Quakers had just three hits in the game, one each by Laura Hall, Caroline Barnette and Rachel Howard. Ashley Boteler picked up the loss, giving up three runs off four hits.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, April 22nd, as they play host to Bridgewater College at the Moyer Complex. The first game is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start.
