Roanoke Splits Two Games on Sunday in the Beach Blast Tournament
The Basics - Game One
Score: Roanoke 0, Rutgers-Camden 2
Records: Roanoke 5-4, Rutgers-Camden 1-2
Location: Princess Anne Athletic Complex - Virginia Beach, Va.

The Lead: Despite a strong effort on the mound from Taylor Asimakopoulos, Roanoke fell 2-0 in its first game on Sunday in the Beach Blast Tournament.

How it Happened:
  • Rutgers-Camden was able to get on the board first after pushing across one unearned run in the first inning.
  • The Maroons had their opportunities with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, but Becca Wenger was thrown out at home to stop the Roanoke rally.
  • In the third inning Rutgers-Camden was able to push across one more run after a Brittany Scott double would score Taylor Nichols from first base.
  • Roanoke's opportunities were far and few between as Rutgers-Camden pitcher Brittany Scott would toss the complete game one-hit shutout while only surrendering two walks.
  • Taylor Carter had the lone hit for the Maroons and Asimakopoulos threw a complete game while only giving up one earned run and striking out seven.



The Basics - Game Two
Score: Roanoke 2, Salem 1
Records: Roanoke 6-4, Salem 5-7
Location: Princess Anne Athletic Complex - Virginia Beach, Va.

The Lead: Roanoke used multiple pitching efforts to win 2-1 against Salem capping off the Beach Blast Tournament.

How it Happened:
  • After Salem scored its lone run in the second inning, RC responded in its half of the third inning when Taylor Slate scored off of a single by Katie Smith.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Carter singled to right field to start the inning and worked her way around the bases to third after a stolen base and a passed ball.
  • Carter would score after Rachel Guilliams hit a sacrifice fly to left field giving the Maroons the 2-1 advantage heading into the final two frames.
  • Roanoke would hold Salem in the bottom of the fifth with one out and runners on first and third. Emily Salsberry would replace Courtney Oliver on the mound and the first batter Salsberry faced hit a ground ball back at her.
  • The runner at third would try to score, but Salsberry fielded it and threw out the runner at home as her catcher Mattie Morris applied the tag to sustain RC's lead.
  • With bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Teresa Wagner would work out of the jam to pick up her first save of the season and help guide the Maroons to the 2-1 victory.
  • Oliver picked up her first win of the season on the mound after throwing 4.1 innings and only surrendering one run. Salsberry threw 1.1 innings of relief and struck out one while not giving up a hit.
  • Offensively, Carter led the Maroons with three hits and two stolen bases on the day. Smith was 1-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and Katie Priester was 1-for-3 with a double.

Up Next: Roanoke will host a doubleheader against Averett on Saturday, March 12th that will start at 1:00 p.m. at a site that is to be determined.
