Jada Karnes named ODAC Pitcher of the Week

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) announced its multi-sport Athletes of Week on Monday afternoon for week 28 of the 2021-22 season. Roanoke College junior righty Jada Karnes was selected as the ODAC Softball Pitcher of the Week. This is her first career conference weekly honor.

Last week, the nationally 19th-ranked Maroons (12-2) competed at the The Spring Break Games in Orlando, Fla. Roanoke went 4-2 in those outings with two more games cancelled due to weather. Karnes appeared in five of those contests and registered three wins and a save to improve to 7-0 on the year. In each of her three starts, the Roanoke-native went the distance and collected a trio of complete game victories.

Karnes' first outing was a six-inning shutout of Marian University (Wis.), 8-0. She gave up three hits and walked a pair while striking out seven. She came back later that day and closed the door on Marietta College (Ohio) for a save in a 7-6 Maroons win. She allowed a run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The next day, Karnes started and earned a 2-1 victory over the University of Mount Union (Ohio). She allowed one run on four hits. She did not walk a batter and fanned two in seven innings in the circle.

Karnes pitched twice on the final day. She started and picked up a 6-2 win over Muskingum University (Ohio). She gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits. She again did not allow a free pass and struck out a season-best 12 batters in a full seven innings. Karnes returned to the pitching plate later that day with 2.1 innings of relief in a 5-3 setback to Otterbein University (Ohio). She allowed two runs on a hit with two walks and three punchouts.

For the season, Karnes is second in the ODAC with seven wins in nine appearances. She leads the league in shutouts (5) and is tied for first in complete games (7). In 53.2 innings in the circle, she has struck out an ODAC-high 83 batters. She owns a 1.70 ERA with the opposition hitting just .178 against her.
