Roanoke Sweeps No.9 Randolph-Macon

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 4, Randolph-Macon 3
Records: Maroons 11-8, Yellow Jackets 23-6
Location: Ashland, Va

The Lead: The Maroons take down the No.9 Yellow Jackets in their trip down to Ashland. The Yellow Jackets took the lead in game one, but the Maroons battled back and pushed the game into extra innings. In game two Roanoke took the lead fast in the top of the first and finished the game with a score of 8-0.

Highlights:

  • After six scoreless innings Kate Houle lead off the inning with a double into left field and was followed by a homerun into right field that was belted by Lilly Burns to tie up the game.
  • With the game going into extra innings a pinch hit double by Rachel Sirbaugh allowed for the runner at second to score. Adriana Rivera doubled into center field which brought in Morgan Clark who pinch ran for Sirbaugh. The Yellow Jackets battled back in the bottom of the eighth to bring the game within one run but was unable to pull ahead.

Highlights:

  • In game two the Maroons picked up where they left off in game one and took the lead in the top of the first. Clark reached first on and error by the third basewoman which allowed for her to advance to third. Rivera reached first on a fielder's choice by the shortstop which allowed Clark to score.
  • Sammie Murphy led off the top of the third with a single up the middle and Serenity Bishop followed with a single into left field to put runners on the corners. Lauryn Chappell pinch ran for Bishop and attempted to steal second and drew the throw which allowed for Murphy to score.  
  • With runners on first and second in the top of the fifth Bishop hit an RBI single into right field and advance to second on a throw. Burns hit a two run double into right field. Lauren Hoffman launched a two-run home run over the left field fence to bring the score up to 7-0. Makayla Austin and Sirbaugh both reached base with singles to the outfield. Murphy was able to reach first on an error by the second basewoman and Sirbaugh scored on an overthrown ball to third.
  • Bishop, Hoffman, and Murphy all went two for three in game two.
  • Lindsay Gedro pitched a 1 hit shut out against the Yellow Jackets in game two. 

 

Up next: Roanoke will travel down to Virginia Beach April 16th to face the No.10 Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan. Game times are scheduled for 1:00pm and 3:00pm.
