Roanoke Splits With No. 10 Virginia Wesleyan

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 9, Virginia Wesleyan 1

The Lead: The Maroons split with No.10 Virginia Wesleyan in their weekend long road trip. The Maroons took game one in six innings with a score of 9-1. Game two was a battle but Virginia Wesleyan was able to take away the 6-1 win.

Highlights:

  • The Maroons took the lead quick in game one with a wild pitch and a throwing error by the catcher which brought in Meri Bostic and Morgan Clark.
  • In the top of the fourth Kate Houle lead off the inning with a single up the middle and was followed by a double into left field from Lilly Burns which score Houle. Madison Courts hit a deep fly ball into left field which allowed for Burns to tag up and score.
  • Meri Bostic led off the top of the fifth with a double into left field and then later advanced to third off a wild pitch. Adriana Rivera singled to the left side bringing in Bostic. Molly Epperson singled through the left side of the field putting runners on the corners. Burns doubled into centerfield which allowed Rivera to score.
  • In the top of the sixth Makayla Austin singled into center field. Madison Cooke hit a pinch-hit single into center field bringing in a run. With runners on second and third Serenity Bishop doubled into left field bringing in the last two runs of the game.

Highlights:

  • In game two Virginia Wesleyan took the lead in the bottom of the first putting up four runs and adding two more in the bottom of the second.
  • With hopes of a rally in the top of the third Lauren Hoffman lead off the inning with a single through the left side of the field and then stole second. Rachel Sirbaugh singled into center field which brought in Hoffman. The Maroons were able to defensively hold the Marlins for the remainder of the game but unfortunately were not able to pull ahead.
  • Burns went 2 for 3 in game one with 2 RBI's. Sirbaugh went 2 for 3 in game two.
