Game Notes vs. R-MC and VWC - Women's Basketball

Roanoke (17-2, 13-2 ODAC) will try to keep its nine-game winning streak alive as they travel to Randolph-Macon (15-4, 12-2 ODAC) and Virginia Wesleyan (13-5, 10-3 ODAC) this weekend. They will look to avenge one of their two losses of the season against the Yellow Jackets, a 73-43 decision on Jan. 9. 

Series Information vs. R-MC
The Maroons lead the all-time series, 33-30, 28-28 since Dunagan has been at Roanoke. From 1976-1996, the Maroons led the series, 23-9. From 1996-99, the Yellow Jackets won seven of the next nine meetings. The Maroons won the following six meetings over the next three years before RMC took 13 of the final 15 meetings since 2002. The Maroons took the first game at home in 2006, 78-65 (12/2), breaking an eight-game losing streak. The final two games went down to the wire, as RMC won 66-60 at home and 76-72 in the 2007 ODAC Tournament. The Maroons fell to #12 RMC, 73-67 at home and 60-58 in Ashland. Series Information vs. VWC
The Maroons lead the all-time series, 35-17, 33-15 since head coach Susan Dunagan has been at Roanoke. The Marlins have enjoyed the most recent success against the Maroons, winning five out of the last seven meetings. After dropping the first four out of five meetings to VWC, Roanoke went 20-2 from 1988-2000, including a 16-game winning streak during that span (1988-97). Since 2000, the series stands at 18-17 in 35 meetings including a 61-60 victory at the Bast Center this season.
 
Last Meeting vs. R-MC – Jan. 9, 2009 (73-43 L)
SALEM, Va. --- Jaleesa Osborne and Caitlyn Long both scored in double-figures as the Maroons lost, 73-43, to Randolph-Macon Friday night in ODAC action at the C. Homer Bast Center. The Maroons fell to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC. The Yellow Jackets improved to 6-4, 4-2. 
The 8-2 record is the best start for the Maroons since 1999-00 season. The 73-43 decision was the biggest margin of loss since their 2005-06 meeting (48-83). Roanoke has lost the last five contests against the Yellow Jackets.
 
Osborne, the team leader in scoring, had 13 points for her seventh game in double-figures this season. She also recorded four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Long was 5-for-6 from the line to contribute to her 12 points on the night.
 
Despite outscoring Randolph-Macon 11-4 on second chance points, Roanoke was out rebounded 44-38. The Yellow Jackets bench held a 28-5 advantage over the Maroons while also topping Roanoke 21-18 in the paint and 9-4 on fast breaks. The Maroons committed 19 turnovers which led to 22 of R-MC's 73 points.
 
After over two minutes of scoreless play in the first half, Long and Erin Jenkins both connected on jumpers to give the Maroons a 4-0 lead. A three minute 11-2 run stretched the score to 17-8 as Roanoke maintained a lead for nearly half of the period with the points spread among the five starters. 
 
Maggie Roy hit one from behind the arc followed by a crucial layup from R-MC's Renee Stein for the first lead change of the night and a one point advantage (18-17) with 9:43 to play.  After an additional lead change, the Yellow Jackets regained the lead 5:25 to play and increased the margin to six points (33-27) by the intermission.
 
Roanoke scored first in the second half off of a layup from Osborne followed by a three pointer from Jenkins to cut the deficit to one. R-MC responded with a 23-8 run over the next 10 minutes to gain a commanding 56-40 lead with 9:45 remaining. The Yellow Jackets immediately went on a second scoring burst of 13-2 to extend their lead to 27 points at the 3:29 mark.
 
Both teams cleared their benches in the remaining minutes as R-MC maintained control and allowed only one more point from the host team through the final buzzer. 
 
Lindsay Riesbeck led the Yellow Jackets with 15 points as she was 6-for-8 from the field. She also contributed three steals, two rebounds and one block. Also scoring in double-figures was Amanda Hiltunen with 13. Hiltunen ripped down five boards and went 4-for-4 from the line.
 
Last Meeting vs. VWC– Jan. 10, 2009 (61-60 W)
SALEM, Va. --- Sophomore Jordan Gholson recorded her first career double-double in the 61-60 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at the C. Homer Bast Center. The Maroons improved to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC. The Marlins, who were previously undefeated in the conference, dropped to 9-3 and 6-1. 
The 9-2 record ties for the best start for the Maroons since 1998-99 season. The 61-60 decision provided sweet revenge for the 63-60 season-ending loss to the Marlins in the 2007-08 ODAC semifinal game.
 
Gholson, the team leader in scoring, had 18 points and 10 rebounds in her sixth game in double-figures this season. She also recorded six blocks to tie her career-high and moved her into sixth on the all-time career list at Roanoke. She passed Sarah Dingledine '00 (71) with 73 career blocks.
  
Roanoke out-rebounded VWC 37-34 and had an advantage in points off turnovers (12-11), points in the paint (36-22), and bench points (12-4). The Marlins outscored the Maroons 14-12 off of second chance points. Roanoke improved in the second half as it shot 51.7% from the field.
 
Gholson hit a jumper to open the scoring. Virginia Wesleyan's Jill Weston responded with a three pointer to take a 3-2 lead. The Marlins then went on a 4-0 run to increase the lead to three.
 
At the 14:09 minute mark, Roanoke answered with a 7-0 run to make the score 11-7. Two Marlin layups tied the game at 11 with 9:58 left in the half. Three more ties ensued before Caitlyn Long drained a three pointer to give Roanoke a 24-21 lead with 2:15 remaining. Kristina Jameson added three points for the Marlins and Long answered with a jumper. The Maroon lead was brief as Jordan Neville scored on a tip-in to tie the score 26-26 before the half.
 
Jaleesa Osborne scored first in the second half followed by a layup from Long to give Roanoke a five point edge (31-26). The Maroons maintained the lead until 14:43 when Tonia Jones banked in a layup. 
Two-pointers from Gholson and VWC's Jocelyn Spencer made the score 41-39 VWC. Virginia Anne Hagood swished a three pointer with 12:43 remaining to give Roanoke a one point advantage (42-41). 
 
The Maroons upheld the lead until the 6:04 mark when Jill Weston hit one from downtown for three points. Tied at 52, senior Erin Jenkins connected from three-point territory to give the women a three point edge. Andrea Ushinski retaliated by scoring one of VWC's six threes of the half.
 
Gholson scored her sixth layup of the night with 2:52 left to play to make the score 57-55. The Marlins connected on a three pointer from Jameson and a shot from inside the paint from Jones for a three point lead. Gholson sealed the game for the Maroons as she sank two free-throws and a layup with forty seconds on the clock. Roanoke's defense held the Marlins as time expired.
 
Ushinski led the Marlins with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Also scoring in double-figures for VWC was Jones with 11.  Maggie Smith added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists before fouling out with 1:26 left to play.  Jones and Smith combined for eight boards.
 
Long was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc in the victory to move her into sixth place all time in three pointers made. She is also six in three pointers attempted with 286. Hagood tied her season-high of seven rebounds.
 
Last Time Out – Feb. 3, 2009 vs. Lynchburg (80-55 W)
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke had four players score in double-figures in an 80-55 win over Lynchburg at the Bast Center Tuesday evening. The win improved the Maroons to 17-2 overall, 13-2 in the ODAC. The Hornets dropped to 7-12, 5-9 in the conference.
 
The 17-2 start is the best since the 1996-97 season. The 25-point win was the eighth of the season as the Maroons are ranked 18th in the country in scoring margin. It was the ninth win in a row for the women, the longest since the 1998-99 season.
 
Roanoke is now 59-8 all-time and avenged a 61-60 loss to the Hornets on Jan. 6. The women won the rebounding battle, 41-26 and scored 19 points off 18 Lynchburg turnovers.
 
Roanoke dominated in nearly every aspect of the game, outscoring Lynchburg, 43-8 in the paint, 16-6 in second chance points and 13-0 in fast break points. The Maroons shot 48% for the game, but blistered the nets in the first half, shooting 64% from the field while holding the Hornets to only 36.7-percent. 
 
The Maroons jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first four minutes lead by Jaleesa Osborne with six points to start the game. Lynchburg got back in the game with a 12-4 run to cut it to four, 20-16 with 9:26 remaining.
 
A three-pointer by Courtney Brewer kept the Hornets close to make the score, 28-22 at the 5:48 mark. Roanoke made a push, ending the half with an 11-2 run to make it 39-24 at the half. Jordan Gholson led the way with eight of the 11 points during that span.
 
Roanoke came out the gate strong in the second half as they pushed its lead to 28, 62-34 with 9:31 remaining after two made free-throws by Rachel Hawkins. Katie Crump scored seven points Lynchburg on a 12-2 run to make it 64-46 with 6:58 remaining.
 
Roanoke scored 14 of the next 17 points to increase its lead to 78-49 with 1:30 left which was the largest lead of the contest and sealed the longest win-streak of the season for the Maroons.
 
Gholson led all scorers with 16 along with eight rebounds and four blocked shots. She now has 40 blocks on the season, just five shy of tying the single-season record in addition to moving to fourth in career blocked shots. Erin Jenkins finished with 15 points, four steals and two blocked shots. Caitlyn Long had 14 points, four rebounds, a team-high five assists and three steals.
 
Brewer finished with 11 points to lead the Hornets. Kylie Lucas had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
 
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
R-MC (15-4, 12-2 ODAC) has won the last 11 games after dropping a one point decision (67-66) to ODAC-rival Washington & Lee on Jan. 4. Over the past week, R-MC picked up four wins, defeating Dickinson in a nonconference road game, and earning three ODAC victories against Eastern Mennonite, Bridgewater, and Randolph. The Yellow Jackets sit a half-game behind Roanoke for first place in the conference standings. R-MC's three-point shooting percentage (43.) ranks first in the nation, while its 78.0 points per game ranks tenth. Molly Ariail notched her seventh double-double of the season against EMU, second only to Randolph's Michelle Brockman.
 
Scouting the Marlins
VWC's (13-5, 10-3 ODAC) Tonia Jones averaged 18 points in the Marlin's 2-0 week with ODAC wins over Bridgewater and EMU. She put up a career-high 25 points against BC, helped by a career-best 9-of-10 free throws. She also dished out five assists. Jones followed that effort with 11 points in a key win over EMU. She continues to lead VWC in scoring with 13.3 points, hitting 42.9% from the field. She ranks third for the Marlins in steals and fourth in assists. Maggie Smith had 15 points and seven boards against BC. Andrea Ushinski added 10 points and six caroms. Ushinski led VWC with16 points and seven boards against EMU. Jill Weston had 15 markers while Kristina Jameson added 10 points.
 
About the Maroons
Roanoke (17-2, 13-2 ODAC) has won the last nine games after dropping a 73-43 decision to Randolph-Macon on Jan. 9. They won all three games last week by an average of 37.6 points. Caitlyn Long scored 43 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out nine assists in addition to five steals last week. Against Randolph, Long scored 21 points and hit 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Against Hollins, she scored 14 points and hit 4-of-6 from three-point range with three assists. For the week, she hit 8-of-15 from beyond the arc. Jordan Gholson had a double-double against E&H with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Lindsay Skaff had 11 points against Hollins, hitting 3-of-5 from deep. Cappy Sullenberger pulled down 10 rebounds, a career-high for the first year player.
 
Caitlyn Long scored 57 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and dished out 14 assists in the last four games. Against Randolph, Long scored 21 points and hit 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in addition to three assists. Against Hollins, she scored 14 points and hit 4-of-6 from three-point range with three assists. In three games, she hit 8-of-15 from beyond the arc. She leads the team in scoring (11.6 ppg), three-pointers made (36) and free-throws made (47). Long has scored in double-figures in 12 games, including ten of the last 11 games.
 
Jordan Gholson leads the Maroons in blocked shots (40), rebounds (6.2 rpg) and field goal percentage (50.6%). She is second in scoring (11.2 ppg) and has 11 games in double-figures. She is ranked second in the ODAC in field goal percentage and blocked shots. Jaleesa Osborne leads the team in steals (49) and assists (69) while averaging 10.3 points per game. She is ranked in the ODAC in field goal percentage (6th), assists (5th), steals (4th) and leads the conference in assist-turnover ratio (2.19).
  
Record Watch
Jordan Gholson has recorded 40 blocked shots this season to move up to sixth on the single-season list.  Her 85 career blocked shots has moved her up to fifth on the all-time list. Jaleesa Osborne's 187 steals rank her seventh on the career steals list at Roanoke.  Her 244 career assists is ninth all-time.  Caitlyn Long's 114 career three-pointers rank her sixth while her 336 three-point attempts are sixth all-time.  Erin Jenkins entered the top-10 in career three-pointers made with 74 while her 218 three-point attempts are also ranked 10th all-time at Roanoke.
