Game Notes vs. Washington & Lee and Eastern Mennonite - Womenâ??s Basketball

Roanoke (21-2, 16-2 ODAC) will try to keep its 13-game winning streak alive as they host Washington & Lee (13-10, 12-6 ODAC) and travel to Eastern Mennonite (13-1, 8-11 ODAC) this weekend. The Maroons are currently atop the ODAC Standings.
 
Series Information vs. W&L
Roanoke is 27-3 all-time vs. the Generals, but W&L has split with the Maroons during the last three seasons with the Generals. Prior to 2005, the Maroons won the first 21 meetings vs. W&L. The Maroons won the first meeting of the season, 61-57. The Maroons avenged their home loss by taking a win on the Generals' home floor, 60-44 to split the season series for a third-straight year. Roanoke won the first meeting this season 71-68.
 
Series Information vs. EMU
The Maroons are 48-20 all-time against Eastern Mennonite since 1976. From 1988-02, the Maroons lost only twice to the Royals posting a 33-2 record during that span. Since then, the Royals have an 8-4 record, including five of their last six games. The Maroons worst defeat to the Royals came back before the Dunagan era in 1978-79, 58-40. Their largest margin of victory came during the 1990-91 season, 97-50. Both meetings were close games as they were decided by a combined five points. The Royals won at home, 77-74 and a last second shot defeated the Maroons, 57-55 on senior night. This season, Roanoke took the first meeting 68-50.
 
Last Meeting vs. W&L – Jan. 16, 2009 (71-68 W)
SALEM, Va. --- Four different Maroons scored in double-figures and were perfect from the line in the 71-68 victory over Washington & Lee on Friday evening in Lexington. The Maroons improved to 10-2 overall and 6-2 in the ODAC. The Generals fell to 5-7 and 5-3 in the conference.
The 10-2 record is the best start for the Maroons since 1998-99 season (12-2). The 71-68 decision was Roanoke's 27th win over the Generals.
Jaleesa Osborne led the team in scoring with 15 points and six assists. She also recorded two steals and went 2-for-2 from the line. Osborne is ranked eighth on the top-10 list at Roanoke and needs eight additional steals to tie Marcee Hufton '96 for seventh.
 
W&L out-rebounded Roanoke 35-31 and had an advantage in points off turnovers (20-16), and points in the paint (34-30). The Maroons outscored the Generals 17-11 off of second chance points and 20-9 in bench points.
 
After three minutes of scoreless play, Gholson's jumper opened the scoring for the second game in a row. Washington & Lee responded with a lay-up from Megan Ingram.
 
At the 16:52 minute mark Caitlyn Long made a three pointer to give Roanoke the lead. Kara Nadeau made a lay-up for the Generals to give them the second lead of the half. Long then sank her second three pointer of the night at 12:16 to cut the W&L lead (12-10) to two.
 
Roanoke and the Generals exchanged the lead several times before Washington & Lee gained the biggest lead (32-27) of the half with 1:52 left to play. The Maroons cut the lead to one after a lay-up and free throw from Rebecca Bays and a lay-up from Long. Marcy Conner drained a free-throw to end the half.
 
Rebecca Bolton scored first in the second half at the 18:15 minute mark followed by a jumper from Virginia Anne Hagood almost two minutes later. Gholson then added two points with 15:39 remaining to give Roanoke the first lead of half (37-36).
 
Felice Herman drained two to give W&L the lead at 13:35. Erin Jenkins then countered with a lay-up to send Roanoke on a 9-4 run to give the Maroons a four-point advantage. The Generals responded with seven unanswered points from Ingram and Herman.
 
A three pointer and pair of free throws from Jenkins brought Roanoke within three points (66-63) with 2:34 remaining. Osborne hit a jumper and sank two free throws to give the Maroons the lead for the remainder of the game.
 
Desperation fouls sent Gholson to the line where she sank her second and third free throws of the night. Ridenhour scored two with less than a minute to play before Bays made a lay-up to seal the win for the Maroons.
  
Felice Herman led the Generals with 16 points and six rebounds. Rebecca Bolton (15) and Bethany Ridenhour (13) also scored in double-figures for W&L. Bolton and Ridenhour combined for 13 rebounds.   Also making an impact was Kara Nadeau who pulled down five boards and went 4-for-5 from the field for eight points.
 
Gholson was 5-for-6 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line for 13 points. She also added four boards and two steals in the victory. Long was the third leading scorer with 12 markers. 
 
Conner recorded a season-high of ten points and five rebounds. Jenkins pulled down a team-high of eight boards and scored eight points.
 
 
Last Meeting vs. EMU– Jan. 17, 2009 (68-50 W)
SALEM, Va. --- Jenkins connected on six three-pointers to help Roanoke overcome a six-point halftime deficit in a 68-50 defeat over Eastern Mennonite in ODAC Women's Basketball Action Saturday evening at the Bast Center. The victory improved the women's record to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the ODAC. The Royals fell to 10-4 and 5-4 in the conference.
 
Jenkins recorded a career-high of 24 points and added four assists, five rebounds in the victory. She went 6-for-9 from beyond the arc for a career-high of six three-pointers. Jenkins six treys rank her third all-time in three-pointers made in a single-game behind Marcee Hufton '96 (7) with Toree Morris with the record with eight (2/14/98 vs. W&L).
 
The Maroons rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit and finished the contest outscoring the Royals, 36-8 in the final 18 minutes of the game.
 
The 11-2 record is the best start for the Maroons since 1998-99 season (12-2). The 68-50 decision was Roanoke's 55th win over EMU and broke a two-game losing streak against the Royals.
 
Roanoke shot 20 percent from three point range and 48.1 percent from the field in the first period to 72.7 percent and 53.6 percent respectively in the second half. The Royals went from 66.7 percent beyond the arc and 46.4 percent from the field in the first half to 20 percent in both categories during the second period. 
 
The Maroons out-rebounded EMU 33-30 which aided in the 22-16 advantage from points in the paint. Roanoke also held an 8-2 edge in fast break points which contributed to their 11 point difference in points off turnovers (19-8). The Royals outscored the Maroons in bench points (7-6) and in second chance points (12-10).
 
Eastern Mennonite jumped out first with a three pointer from Brittany Snyder only to be answered with a two pointer from Erin Jenkins. Snyder then drained another trey before an additional Jenkins jumper cut the Royals lead (6-4) to two at 18:07.
 
Melissa Lewis started an eight point run for EMU when she sank one from behind the arc at the 14:17 minute mark. Lewis followed her three by hitting the front and back end at the line. Snyder then hit her fourth three of the half to give EMU the largest lead of the half (20-10) with 11:53 remaining.
 
The Royals upheld their lead throughout the rest of the period despite both teams volleying back in forth in shots made. Roanoke managed to decrease the lead (36-30) to six after Jordan Gholson tipped in a rebound with 0:24 seconds remaining in the half.
 
Snyder drained her fifth three pointer of the night just nine seconds into the second half to give EMU a nine point lead (39-30). Gholson responded with a lay-up only to be outdone again with a bucket and free throw from Miranda Wolfe to make it 42-34 at the 18:03 minute mark. 
 
The Royal lead stood around eight until Jenkins connected from beyond the arc to bring the Maroons within five at 16:32. Several minutes later, Virginia Anne Hagood made a two-pointer followed by another trey from Jenkins to give Roanoke the first and final lead (48-44) of the night.
 
EMU cut the Roanoke lead to two (48-46) with 11:27 remaining but with the momentum on Roanoke's side, the Maroons slowly pulled away.
 
Back-to-back three pointers from Lindsay Skaff and Caitlyn Longincreased the lead (63-46) to 17 with 7:40 left in the half.   Snyder hit her final three-pointer of the contest at 5:10 to make it, 63-49, but the deficit was too large for the Royals.
 
Hagood made a basket for two at the 4:40 minute mark followed by a Wolfe free throw. Jenkins put the icing on the cake with her sixth and final three pointer of the game with 1:10 left to play to make the final score 68-50.
 
Osborne recorded a career-high nine assists for fourth all time in assists in a single game. She needs seven more steals to tie Marcee Hufton '96 for seventh all-time.
 
Gholson tied Long as the team's second leading scorer with 12 points. She also pulled down 10 boards for her second career double-double. Long contributed five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
 
Snyder led the Royals with 20 points, 18 of them from beyond the arc where she was 6-for-6. Wolfe and Danielle Scott scored eight apiece and added a combined 13 rebounds. Melissa Lewis also added seven points and a team-high five assists in the loss.
 
Last Time Out – Feb. 13, 2009 vs. Emory & Henry (70-40 W)
EMORY, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Emory & Henry, 70-40 on Bob Johnson Court Friday evening in Emory, Va. The win improved the Maroons to 21-2 overall, 16-2 in the ODAC. The Wasps, who dropped their third-straight, are now 7-15, 5-12 in the ODAC.
 
Roanoke, now winners of 13-straight, have the most overall wins (21), ODAC wins (16) and the longest win-streak since 1996-97. The Maroons, who are currently ranked fourth in the latest NCAA Div. III South Region rankings, won their ninth game by at least 25-points or more. The women are ranked eighth in scoring defense and held their opponents to below 45-points for the ninth time this season.
 
The Maroons, who are now 51-24 all-time vs. the Wasps, have won their fifth game in the last six meetings. Roanoke has defeated them by at least 30-points in the last three wins in the series.
 
The first eight minutes of the contest remained close as the Maroons held a tight, 15-11 lead with 12:05 left in the first half. That was when Erin Jenkins sparked a 28-2 run to end the half, connecting on all five of her free-throw attempts to tie a school-record. The Maroons went into the half with a commanding 43-13 lead. The 30-point halftime lead was it tied for the largest margin of the season (Hollins, 49-19 12/6).
 
In the second half, the Maroon lead reached as high as 40 points, 63-23 as they went on to win and maintained first-place in the ODAC Standings. The Maroons scored 26 points off 19 EHC turnovers and out-rebounded the Wasps, 38-30. Roanoke outscored the EHC bench, 23-16 with Bethany Holland leading that group with eight points.
 
Roanoke was led by Jenkins with 17 points, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, six rebounds and three blocked shots. She is now in sole possession of seventh all-time with 86 career three-pointers made. Caitlyn Long chipped in 11 points, five rebounds and three assists while Jordan Gholson tossed in nine points, six rebounds and two blocked shots.
 
The Wasps were led by Brittany Rogers with seven points and six assists while Ashlyn Baird chipped in six points.
 
Scouting the Generals
W&L went 1-1 last week as it topped Emory & Henry, 62-55, on Tuesday, before falling to Randolph-Macon, 79-70, on Saturday. Rebecca Bolton registered her seventh double-double of the season against E&H with 11 points and 11 rebounds. She tallied a team-high 22 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals against R-MC. Meghan Ingram led four Generals in double figures against E&H with 15 points. She also notched 16 points against R-MC. Bethany Ridenhour added 12 markers in that contest. Ingram leads the Generals with an average of 15 points per game. Bolton leads the team with 7.1 rebounds per game.
 
Scouting the Royals
EMU (13-10, 8-10 ODAC) The Royals suffered a loss to RMC to open last week, but a win over Hollins snapped EMU's six-game skid. Danielle Scott led EMU with 17 points and seven boards against R-MC. Marla Young added 12 points and seven rebounds. Brittany Snyder hit 4-of-6 from deep on her way to 18 points versus HU. Addie Bashourn was in double figures with 11 points. Snyder leads the Royals with 14.2 points per game. Ebony Dennis is averaging 8.2 rebounds per game.
 
About the Maroons
Roanoke's current 13-game win-streak, 21-2 start, and the 16 ODAC wins are the team's best since the 1996-97 season. RC went 5-0 in nonconference play for the first time since the 2004-05 season with its win over Bennett. That victory also clinched RC's 16th 20-win season in program history, 15th under head coach Susan Dunagan. Caitlyn Long notched 15 points to lead the Maroons against Bennett. She hit 10-of-10 shots from the line in the process. Erin Jenkins splashed 17 points to go with six rebounds and three blocks against E&H. She went 5-for-5 from beyond the arc, helping RC to an 8-for-12 showing from deep. Long was also in double figures with 11 points. Long is the Maroon's leading scorer with 11.6 ppg. Jordan Gholson leads the team in rebounds with 6.1 per game.
 
Record Watch
Jordan Gholson has recorded 49 blocked shots this season to set a new single-season mark.  Her 94 career blocked shots has moved her up to fourth on the all-time list.  Jaleesa Osborne's 198 career steals passes Carrie McConnell '00 for sixth on the all-time list.  Her 259 career assists is eighth all-time, three away from passing Emilie Voelker '83 for seventh. 
 
Caitlyn Long's 120 career three-pointers rank her sixth while her 355 three-point attempts are fifth all-time. Her 76.5% free-throw and 35.3% three-point percentages are among the career top-10 at Roanoke.  Erin Jenkins entered the top-10 in career three-pointers made with 86, tying both McConnell and Debbie Puch '93 for eighth all-time. Her 236 three-point attempts are one shy from passing McConnell for ninth all-time at Roanoke.
