SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke women's basketball opened 2010 with a 70-47 win over Meredith in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 7-1 while the Avenging Angels dropped to 3-4 on the season.
The Maroons jumped out early with an 8-0 run to start the game, setting the tone for the remainder of the contest. Roanoke held a game-high lead of 31 points with 4:18 to play in the game before clearing its bench.
Roanoke controlled the contest, out-rebounding their opponent, 49-32 while outscoring Meredith 34-16 in the paint and 22-8 in points off turnovers.
Shooting hurt Meredith as it made only 6-of-31 from the field in the second half, all part of a 14-for-55 day (25.5%). Roanoke shot 42.6% from the floor, hitting 15-of-28 (53.6%) in the first half which gave them a comfortable 35-19 halftime advantage. Both teams shot well from the line, with Roanoke shooting 81% and Meredith 94.4%. The Avenging Angels hit all 15 attempts in the second half.
Roanoke had three players score in double figures, led by Jordan Gholson (Louisa, VA)with 15 points (6-of-8 shooting) and five rebounds. Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA, Fort Defiance)had 14 points, including 6-of-6 from the line to go along with six rebounds, five on the offensive glass. Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)finished with 13 points and five caroms while Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt)added eight points with six rebounds and a team-high four steals.
Meredith had two players in double figures, led by 13 points and a game-best seven rebounds by Brittany Cornelius. Hunter Johnson added 12 markers.
The women return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 5 as they host ODAC-rival Lynchburg. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
