Roanoke Pulls Away from Hollins in ODAC Action
ROANOKE, Va. --- Roanoke used an 11-2 run in the second half to pull away from Hollins in ODAC action, 69-44 Sunday afternoon. The Maroons stayed atop the ODAC Standings with a 13-1 mark, and improved to 16-2 overall. Hollins dropped to 1-18, 0-13 in conference play.
 
Roanoke outscored Hollins, 35-0 off the bench, 19-0 in second chance scoring and 28-16 in points off turnovers. The Maroons outrebounded them, 55-27 and held their opponent to 32.1% shooting on the afternoon.
 
A much-improved Hollins squad gave the Maroons all they could handle in the first 20 minutes of play. Jasmine Greene scored four of Hollins six points of the contest, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first three-plus minutes.
 
After a Tamara Phillips three-pointer gave Hollins a 12-11 lead, Roanoke scored eight unanswered points to give them a seven-point advantage with 9:34 remaining.
 
Back-to-back treys from Phillips put Hollins within one, 19-18. Then Greene scored the final eight points of the half for Hollins. But the Maroons outscored Hollins, 16-8 and went into the half with a nine-point lead, 35-26.
 
Up only 12 with 15:56 remaining, Roanoke went on a 11-2 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes and began to pull away, 55-34. Both teams traded buckets over the ensuing six minutes of play before Roanoke went on an 8-0 run to give the Maroons a game-high 28-point cushion. The run was capped with Rachel Dellehunt (Kinderhook, NY, Ichabod Crane)first three-pointer of her career.
 
Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA, Fort Defiance)led Roanoke with 12 points, hitting all five field goal attempts and was 2-for-2 from the line. Jordan Gholson (Louisa, VA, Louisa County)scored 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds.   Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt)narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 10 caroms. She also dished out four assists. Rebecca Bays (Roanoke, VA, William Byrd)finished with seven points, five rebounds and five assists.
 
Jasmine Greene led all scorers with 25 points, hitting all six of her free throw attempts. She added seven rebounds and a game-best five steals. Tamara Phillips had 11 points and four steals. Lacie Forrest chipped in four points along with six boards and three assists.
 
The women are on the road again Tuesday, Feb. 2 as they take on Lynchburg in ODAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
