Roanokeā??s Second Half Outburst Leads to 74-48 Win over Lynchburg
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke used a 23-3 run to open the second half and cruised to a 74-48 win over Lynchburg at Turner Gym Tuesday evening. The Maroons improved to 17-2 overall, 14-1 in the ODAC. The Hornets fell to 4-14, 3-10 in conference play.
 
The game was decided in the second half, with Roanoke outscored Lynchburg, 40-20 and shot 53.8% to the Hornets, 18.2%. The Maroons defense held Lynchburg without a field goal until 10-minutes remaining in the game.
 
The opening stanza was back and forth, as the Hornets and Maroons exchanged leads four times in addition to six tied scores. Lynchburg gained its biggest advantage at 12-9, as Carly Greenlief drained a jumper with 12:24 left in the half.
 
The Maroons responded, as the ODAC's top squad went on a 9-3 run over the last two minutes to take a 34-28 halftime lead. RC exploded in the second half, increasing its lead to as much as 35 with just under five minutes remaining.
 
Roanoke outrebounded LC, 40-29 and outscored its opponent, 25-11 off 21 forced turnovers. They also led LC in points in the paint, 34-16, in which both Jordan Gholson (Louisa, VA, Louisa County)and Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt)combined for 27 points. The Maroons also held a 17-7 advantage in second chance scoring.
 
Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)finished with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals to pace Roanoke. Moats pulled down a game-high eight rebounds to go along with her 16 points. Gholson had 11 points and five boards. Kendra Porter (Jamestown, NC, Dudley)and Jaleesa Osborne (Ordinary, VA, Gloucester)each tossed in eight.
 
Lynchburg was led by Caitlin Falls, who finished with team-highs of 11 points and six caroms. Freshman Leah Bonuccelli chipped in with seven points and six boards off the bench, while Greenlief posted seven points and five assists.
 
The women return to action this weekend in an ODAC doubleheader. The Maroons take on ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. followed by a 2 p.m. Saturday contest vs. Virginia Wesleyan.
