Roanoke Pulls Away Late in 64-51 win Over Washington & Lee
LEXINGTON, Va. --- Roanoke went on a 13-5 run in the final six minutes to pull away in a 64-51 win at Washington & Lee at the Warner Center Friday evening. The Maroons improved to 21-2 overall, 18-1 in the ODAC. The Generals dropped to 14-9, 13-6 in conference play.
 
The Maroons out-rebounded the Generals, 40-36, which including 15 offensive rebounds, six alone from Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt)in the first half. RC shot 18-for-21 from the free-throw line tonight (85.7%). Roanoke, which is nationally-ranked in field goal percentage defense, held W&L to 36.4%, including 8-for-28 (27.6%) for only 19 points in the second-half.
 
Roanoke, which won its 12th-straight game, outscored Washington & Lee, 20-10 in the paint, 19-6 in points off turnovers and 19-2 in second chance scoring. The Maroons are now 29-4 all-time against the Generals, including four out of its last five meetings.
 
With Roanoke up five with eight minutes expired in the game, Washington & Lee went on a 18-6 run over the next six minutes as the Generals built a seven-point advantage, 27-20 with 6:28 remaining.
 
A three-pointer by Caitlyn Long (Roanoke, VA, Cave Spring)gave the Maroons the lead back, 32-31, before a Generals free-throw tied the contest at halftime.
 
Tied 32-all at the half, Roanoke opened the second stanza with a 12-2 run to give the Maroons a 10-point advantage with 15:34 remaining as Washington & Lee called timeout. 
 
The Maroons held on to win thanks in part to hitting 9-of-10 free-throws down the stretch.
 
Moats led the Maroons with 14 points, all in the first half, with nine rebounds and three assists. She was 6-of-6 from the line. Long finished with 13 counters and eight boards as she passed Katrina Williams (Salem, VA, Glenvar)'03 for 10th on the career scoring list at Roanoke.
 
Lindsay Skaff (Charleston, WV, Charleston Catholic)had a career night, with personal-bests of 4-of-4 from the charity stripe, six rebounds and a team-best three steals to go along with seven points. Rebecca Bays (Roanoke, VA, William Byrd)chipped in five makers, along with six caroms and dished out three assists. Jaleesa Osborne (Ordinary, VA, Gloucester)tallied nine points and two assists to move into third all-time in career assists at Roanoke, passing Kristie Workman (Radford, VA, Radford HS)'94 with 354.
 
Meg Ingram finished with game-highs of 17 points and five assists. Becca Bolton had 12 points and eight rebounds while Katy Wilson scored six points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
 
The women return to action tomorrow as they host Eastern Mennonite in the regular season finale. The Maroons will recognize Long, Osborne and Skaff on “Senior Day” prior to tip-off. Game time is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
