Roanoke Edges Lynchburg, 57-53
LYNCHBURG, Va. –Roanoke survived a tough ODAC contest Tuesday night at Lynchburg College, escaping with a 57-53 victory at Turner Gym. The Maroons improve to 8-4, 7-1 in the ODAC.   The Hornets slip to 2-11, 2-6 in conference play.

The women edged the Hornets in the rebounding battle, 32-30, and outscored LC, 17-5 off the bench. Lynchburg scored 21 points off 21 Maroon turnovers, but Roanoke shot 48.9% from the floor (23-47).

The Maroons scored the first nine points of the game and looked on their way to an easy victory before LC climbed back. The Hornets used a 14-4 run to go ahead 14-13, but Roanoke went back ahead and extended the advantage to 31-24 at halftime.

Roanoke again looked likely to put LC away in the second half, taking eight-point leads four different times, but couldn't shake the Hornets. RC went ahead 54-46 with just over four minutes to play, but three-straight Lynchburg baskets, one a three-pointer by Katie Crump, left the Maroons ahead by just a single point with two minutes to play. Roanoke's Nicci Moats converted a lay-up with 50 seconds left and LC couldn't convert on a late attempt to tie.

Junior guard Annie Terry filled the stat line for LC, netting a team-high 12 points with three three-pointers, eight assists and five steals. Leah Bonuccelli scored 11 and Carly Greenlief had nine points, six rebounds and four assists. Crump finished with nine points and four caroms.

Moats led Roanoke with 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals as the only double-figure scorer for her team. It was her sixth double-double of the season. She shot 8-of-13 from the floor, hitting all five free throw attempts.  Jordan Gholson scored eight points before fouling out while Paxton Gwin and Kylie Lucas each tallied seven, with Lucas pulling down five boards.

The women return to action Friday, Jan. 21 as they tip-off against cross-town foe, Hollins in an ODAC match-up. Game time is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
