Roanoke Tops Guilford, 85-77 on the Road
GREENSBORO, NC --- Roanoke had five players score in double-figures in a 85-77 victory over Guilford in ODAC action Saturday afternoon. The Maroons, who won their fifth-straight game, improve to 11-4 overall, 10-1 in the ODAC. The Quakers dropped to 10-7, 6-6 in conference play.
 
The Maroons out-rebounded the Quakers, 42-32, as both teams shot 50% from beyond the arc and 69% from the line.
 
Roanoke jumped out to a 6-1 early advantage before Guilford went on a 24-11 run and took an eight-point lead with 1:45 remaining in the first half. Roanoke's Hannah Davidson (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County) and Rebecca Bays (Roanoke, VA, William Byrd) connected on three-pointers to close the gap to within one at halftime, 30-29.
 
The Quakers took a four-point lead with 17:56 to go before the Maroons went on a 16-6 run to put them on top for good, 50-44 at the 12:18 mark.
 
A layup by Jordan Gholson (Louisa, VA, Louisa County) capped a 14-5 run midway through the second stanza to give RC a game-high 12-point lead, 66-54, with 7:33 remaining. The Maroons kept the Quakers at bay the remainder of the contest for their 10th ODAC win of the season.
 
Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt) polished off another double-double performance with 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead Roanoke. Moats' two blocked shots give her 46 on the season, which ranks her fourth on the single-season list. She also passed Donna Cogar (Stuarts Draft, VA, Stuarts Draft) '92 for fifth in career blocked shots (89). Bays scored a career-high 21 points, shooting 5-of-7 from three-point range and six assists.
 
Gholson finished with 15 points (6-of-8 shooting) and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. She also had a game-best four blocked shots and two steals. Kendra Porter (Jamestown, NC, Dudley) tossed in 11 points with four boards while Davidson chipped in 10 counters.
 
The women return to action on Feb. 1 as they travel to Harrisonburg to take on Bridgewater in conference play. The women rallied to knock off then-undefeated Bridgewater, 65-63 on Jan. 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
