Roanoke Holds off Hollins, 68-62
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke held off an upset-minded Hollins squad, 68-62 at the Bast Center Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 15-6 overall, 14-3 in the ODAC. Hollins dropped to 6-16, 3-14 in conference play.
 
Hollins out-rebounded Roanoke, 39-37 and outscored their cross-town foe, 17-12 in second chance points. The Maroons, however, outscored HU, 21-13 in points off turnovers and 41-18 off the bench as they narrowly escaped a home defeat.
 
Roanoke led for most of the contest and went into the half leading, 30-23. Two made free-throws by Laurel Hankins (Dublin, VA, Bland) put the Maroons up, 45-32 with 14:08 remaining as they seemed to be on their way to another double-digit victory.
 
Hollins, meanwhile, had other ideas. Down 12 with 11-minutes left, Hollins went on a 21-7 run over the next seven minutes and took their first lead of the game, 58-56 after a made jumper by Lacie Forest.
 
The Maroons called timeout, kept their composure, and reeled off 10 unanswered points to take a 66-58 lead with 54-seconds remaining. Kendra Porter (Jamestown, NC, Dudley) was fouled after a made basket by Tamara Phillips and sank both free throws to secure the win.
 
Nicci Moats (Blue Ridge, VA, Lord Botetourt) paced the Maroons with her 12th double-double of the seaon, 19 points and 11 rebounds. She also had three steals and two blocked shots. Hannah Davidson (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County) scored 12 points for the second-straight game, hitting a career-high four three-pointers.
 
Kylie Lucas (Verona, VA, Fort Defiance) added eight points and five boards while Bethany Holland (Fincastle, Va, Buffalo Gap) finished with six points, five rebounds and four steals. Porter had five points, six boards, four assists and two steals.
 
Phillips led Hollins with 17 points, followed by Jasmine Greene with a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with six assists and four steals.
 
The women return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at they host Lynchburg College in their home finale. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bast Center.
