Roanoke falls on the Road to Virginia Wesleyan, 55-44
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Roanoke fell to Virginia Wesleyan, 75-59 in ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) Women's Basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Batten Center.  The Maroons record falls to 1-10 overall, 1-6 in the ODAC, while the Marlins improved to 12-3, 9-1 in conference play.
 
The Maroons, who never led in the contest, couldn't overcome 17 turnovers which led to 15 VWC points in addition to shooting a dismal 50% (9-of-18) from the free throw line.  The women were out-rebounded by the Marlins, 51-38.   Virginia Wesleyan held advantages in the steals column (11-2) and outscored Roanoke, 26-6 off the bench.
 
Roanoke could not get things going in the first half, shooting 11.1% (3-27) and scored a season-low 11 points.  The Maroons held VWC to 22.5% (9-40) for the half, but allowed 24 points as the women went to the locker room with a 13-point halftime deficit.
 
The Marlins jumped out to a 31-16 lead just two minutes elapsed in the second half before the Maroons climbed back in the game.  A Laurel Hankins three-pointer sparked a 9-0 run as Paxton Gwin scored three-straight layups to make it, 31-25 as VWC called timeout with 14:59 to go.
 
Virginia Wesleyan came out of the timeout and raced out to a 13-4 run to jump out to a 15-point lead with nine minutes left as RC called timeout.
 
Roanoke countered following the timeout with an 8-0 run led by Rachel Dellehunt, scoring six over that span to make it a five-point game, 44-39 with 6:02 remaining.  But the Marlins answered back to score 11 of the final 16 points to win to stay atop the ODAC Standings.
 
Nicci Moats produced her second-straight double-double and third in four games with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Gwin added 10 points while Hankins had nine points and eight rebounds.
 
Sarah Seipp led VWC with 14 points, hitting three shots from beyond the arc, in addition to nine rebounds.  Kristen Blalock pulled down a game-best 11 rebounds while Brittany Glasco dished out a team-best six assists.  Shawnee Lewis provided six points, six rebounds and three assists for the Marlins.
 
The women will look to bounce back on Tuesday, Jan. 17 as they host Lynchburg in conference action.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bast Center.
