Despite Moats Career Night, Guilford outlasts Maroons, 67-62 in OT
SALEM - Nicci Moats put in a career performance for Roanoke, but the Maroons couldn't outlast Guilford College, 67-62 in overtime.  The Maroons fall to 4-11, 4-7 ODAC, while the Quakers rise to 14-3, 11-1 in conference play.

Entering the contest the Maroons had won the last nine meetings between these two teams.  Despite the loss, Roanoke still leads the all-time series 33-14.

The Maroons outshot Guilford 39% to 30% from the field, and also led in rebounds 53-42.  However, the Quakers had fewer turnovers than Roanoke 11-23.

In this game, Nicci Moats scored her 800th point, and moved in to ninth all-time in rebounds (623).

The first half proved to be a half of streaks for both teams.  The Maroons opened up on a 6-2 run over the #3 team in the ODAC, Guilford in the opening moments of the game.  The Quakers responded with eight consecutive points of their own to take the 10-6 lead.

The Maroons followed up with an 11-0 run of their own, to take a 17-10 lead.  It didn't take long for Guilford to close the gap, scoring on a 6-2 spurt around the 9:00 mark to get within three points, 19-16.

With 3:00 minutes to go in the half, Guilford started a 7-0 run that finally gave them the lead for the first time since the 13:33 mark.  The Maroons wouldn't let that lead stand as Laurel Hankins drained a jumper with ten seconds left to square things up.

At half, both teams entered the locker room tied at 30.  Paxton Gwin led the Maroons with seven points while Nicci Moats had the edge in rebounds with five.  Gabby Oglesby, the third leading scorer in the ODAC led everyone in the half with 14 points for Guilford

The Maroons opened the half just as they had in the first, with an 8-3 run.  The initial drive was fueled by a jumper from Laurel Hankins, and then followed by two consecutive baskets from Moats.

The Quakers' Jazlyn Gibbs knocked down five consecutive points starting at 14:00 to take the 41-39 lead for Guilford.   Hankins quickly answered with a deep three pointer of her own to reclaim the lead.  Just two minutes later as the Maroons' had slipped again, Hankins hit another three to take the lead again 46-45.

With just 4:30 left, Roanoke trailed by two 50-48 until Moats took a laser pass from Hankins and tied the game at 50-50.

After being fouled under the basket with 2:50 to spare, Moats knocked down a pair of free-throws to tie the game at 52-52.  Gwin knocked down a three just moments later to give the Maroons the lead.  As the clock reached 1:00, Kayla Adams hit a deep three-pointer for the Quakers giving them a two point lead 57-55.

After Rachel Dellahunt drove the lane and grabbed her own rebound, she dished it out to Gwin who layed the ball up for two, tying the game at 57 with just :30 to play.  The Maroons forced a jump ball (in their favor) with 2.1, but could not convert the final shot of regulation, sending the contest into overtime.

In overtime, the Quakers struck first as Morgan King put her team up by two just twenty seconds into OT.  At 2:45 left, Moats pulled down her 19th board, a career-high, and put her tied fourth all time in single game rebounds.   That rebound led to a three-pointer from Paxton Gwin that put the Maroons up one 60-59.  Dellahunt followed that up with a basket of her own to take the three point lead.

However, Guilford would finish of the game scoring seven consecutive points with a Kayla Adams three-pointer followed by free throws from Oglesby and Jaclyn Nucci.  Those seven points sealed a Guilford victory over the Maroons 67-62.

Gwin led the Maroons in scoring with 17 points, while Moats finished with her career-high 19 rebounds and 14 points.  This also marks the sixth consecutive game for Moats with a double-double.  Gabby Oglesby led the scoring for the Quakers with 22 points, going six-for-six from the free throw line.

The Maroons will return to action on Tuesday, January 31st as they play host to Bridgewater College.  That contest is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
