Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker to Eastern Mennonite, 45-44 on Saturday
SALEM - The Roanoke Women's Basketball Team pushed the Eastern Mennonite Royals to the limit Saturday, falling in the final moments of the contest, 45-44.  Roanoke falls to 4-14, 4-10 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action, while the Royals rise to 18-2, 14-2 in the ODAC.

Roanoke opened the contest against the top team in the ODAC putting the first points on the board from Taylor Duggins.  The first half would see nine lead changes as both teams battled back and forth for possession of the ball.  The teams were tied 11-11 until Roanoke went on a 9-2 run, including five points from Tatum McKee.  The Royals were able to work back and took the lead heading in to the locker room, 23-22.

Through all of the second half, both teams battled back and forth, almost a mirror image of the first half.

With two minutes left, EMU's Keyla Baltimore dropped in a layup to cut the Roanoke lead to one, 41-40.  Just moments later, Paxton Gwin nailed a trey from deep, giving the maroons a four point lead.  The Royals proceeded to march down the court and knock down a three-pointer of their own with 1:10 on the clock, to pull back within one.

The game didn't see another basket until the final :14 as Rheinheimer broke through traffic in the lane and flipped one in the basket to take the 45-44 lead for the Royals.  The Maroons were unable to respond and fell in the final moments 45-44.

Both teams shot evenly from the field hitting 30% of their shots.  Roanoke outrebounded the Royals 43-41, but narrowly had more turnovers 20-19.  The big difference in the stat sheet for the two teams were steals, where Eastern Mennonite took away 12, opposed to Roanoke's three.

Laurel Hankins led the Maroons with 13 points, while Paxton Gwin posted a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.  Also in double figures for Roanoke was Tatum McKee who netted 10 points on the afternoon.

Stephanie Rheinheimer was the top scorer in the game with 15 points, followed by Kayla Yoders who put down 10 points and a team high 10 rebounds.

The Maroons return to action on Friday, February 10th as they play host to Emory & Henry in the C. Homer Bast Center.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM
