SALEM --- Roanoke fell to Ferrum, 77-51 in the women's basketball season-opener Tuesday night at the Bast Center.  The Maroons are now 0-1, while the Panthers improve to 1-0 on the young season.

Roanoke, who holds a 31-11 series advantage, is only 6-5 against the Panthers in the last 11 meetings.  The Maroons, playing without lone senior All-ODAC performer Nicci Moats and junior sharpshooter Hannah Davidson due to injuries, were unable to overcome 29 turnovers against the Panthers.

Ferrum out-rebounded Roanoke, 41-38 and shot 51.6% from three-point range (8-19).  The Maroons meanwhile, shot 40% from the floor (22-55) and 26.7% from three-point range (4-15).

Sophomore guard Paxton Gwin totaled 21 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead the Maroons.  It was her first double-double of her career as she posted career-highs in the scoring and rebounding categories.

Talyor Duggins tallied 10 points, connecting on 2-of-3 from three-point range in her first collegiate appearance.  Laurel Hankins contributed six points and four rebounds.

Tesla Akers led Ferrum with 16 points, connecting on 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.  Kayla Goins added 12 points, connecting on four trey balls as well in addition to four assists and four steals to pace the Panthers. 

Shea Smith also tossed in 12 counters as the Panthers had three players score in double-figures.  Kristen Keith had eight points and seven rebounds while Jacole Hairston chipped in nine points, four boards and three assists.

The women will travel to Ashland, VA to play in the Randolph-Macon Invitational Nov. 18-19.  The Maroons will play against Mary Washington at 8 p.m. on Friday and will follow with a 2 p.m. contest against Christopher Newport.
