Christopher Newport takes down Roanoke, 72-58

ASHLAND --- Roanoke fell to Christopher Newport, 72-58 in the final day of the Randolph-Macon Tip-Off Classic Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Gym.  The Maroons slip to 0-3 while the Captains, who have 90 votes in the D3Hoops.com Pre-Season Poll, improve to 2-0.

The Maroons, who last played against CNU in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament, are now 11-10 against their in-state foe.

CNU raced out to an 8-0 lead, but after a three-pointer by Taylor Duggins and a lay-up by Rachel Dellehunt cut it to within three, the Captains increased their lead to 10.  They scored seven unanswered points to make it, 15-5 at the 12:38 mark.

The Maroons would cut the lead down to six after two made free-throws by Samantha Garst to make it 21-15 with 8:40 left in the half.  CNU responded by going on a 15-5 run over the ensuing seven minutes of play and went into the locker room with a 10-point halftime lead.

The Captains would increase their lead in the second half to as high as 28 points with 6:47 left to put the Maroons away.  But Roanoke didn't quit and outscored CNU 22-8 to finish the game.

Roanoke shot 41.2% from the floor, including 8-for-19 from beyond the arc and 8-for-8 from the line.  CNU was 47.1% overall shooting for the day, forced 19 turnovers and out-rebounded the Maroons, 37-30.

Laurel Hankins and Kayla Lemke paced Roanoke with 10 points each, hitting four three-pointers and 7-of-13 from the floor combined.  Rachel Dellehunt led the Maroons with a career-best five assists, in addition to five rebounds, while Paxton Gwin added a team-best six boards and two steals.

Nicole Mitchell had a game-high 14 points to lead three Captains in double-figures, shooting 6-of-10 from the floor and pulled down five rebounds.  Tia Perry tossed in 11 counters in addition to five assists.  Jerlisa Bowser chipped in 11.

The women will return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 30 as they will travel to Harrisonburg to play Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC-opener.  Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
