Maroons Top Hollins 65-53 in First ODAC Game of 2013
SALEM – The Roanoke College women's basketball team picked up its first win of 2013 on Wednesday, defeating Hollins University 65-53.  The Maroons now have a record of 4-7, 2-2 ODAC, while Hollins is 2-7 and 0-4 in ODAC play.
 
Paxton Gwin led the Maroons in scoring, tying her career high of 27 points, a mark she posted earlier this season.  Gwin was 10-13 from the field and picked up seven rebounds along the way.  The Maroons also got a spark from Laurel Hankins, who earned her first career double-double, tallying 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Hollins took the early advantage in the contest, going up by five, 7-2, in the first four minutes of the contest.  The Maroons quickly turned it around to take a one point lead after baskets by Rachel Dellehunt and Tatum McKee.  After the first 10 minutes of the contest, Meghan Gadell knocked down a free throw to put Roanoke up 13-9.
 
Roanoke continued to build the lead, going up by as many as 12 points, 30-18, after Gwin knocked down a trey with 2:16 to play in the half.  Hollins fought back, cutting its deficit to eight points, 30-22 after a last second jumper from Lacie Forrest.
 
Hollins opened the second half going on a 10-3 run over the first six minutes, pulling within one, 33-32.  The Maroons would never relinquish the lead, however, building their lead back to as many as 12, 54-42, after Kelsey Smith hit a layup at 4:56 to play.  Roanoke held that advantage for the remainder of the contest, winning 65-53 in the first ODAC contest of 2013.
 
Gwin and Hankins led the Maroons in scoring with 27 and 10 points, respectively.  They were followed by Tatum McKee who posted nine points, seven rebounds and a team high four assists.
 
Lacie Forrest and Jasmine Greene tallied 13 points each for Hollins on the evening.  Greene earned a double-double as well, pulling down 10 rebounds in the effort.  She also led Hollins in assists with six.
 
Roanoke narrowly outshot Hollins 36.1 to 35.6 percent from the field, as well as 29.4 to 25.0 percent from behind the arc.  The Maroons also had the advantage in rebounds (47-37) and assists (15-12).
 
The Maroons return to action on Saturday, January 5th as they play host to ODAC opponent Shenandoah University.  That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM tip-off.
