Roanoke Edged by Shenandoah, 67-64 in ODAC Action on Saturday
SALEM – The Roanoke College women's basketball team was edged in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday by Shenandoah University, 67-64.  The Maroons now have a record of 4-8, 2-3 ODAC, while the Hornets are now 6-7 and 2-2 in ODAC play.
 
Kelsey Smith led the Maroons with a career-high 16 points, shooting 4-7 from behind the arc.  Paxton Gwin finished the contest with 10 points and a team high six rebounds.  Hankins finished the contest with 14 points, four rebounds and five assists, while Tatum McKee was also in double-digits on the afternoon, adding 10 points to the cause.
 
Tatum McKee scored six of Roanoke's first eight points to open the game, while Gwin tallied the other two.  Smith added five more to the score, hitting a jumper and a trey to put Roanoke up by six with 12:20 to play in the first half.  The Hornets' Chittenden responded with five points of her own to bring Shenandoah back within one, 13-12.  The two teams played back and forth for the remainder of the half, tying the game six more times before hitting the locker room.  The final basket in the half came from Rachel Dellehunt as she hit a jumper with nine seconds on the clock to tie the game at 32-32.
 
Roanoke tied its largest lead of the game of the game with 11:18 to play in the second half, when Hankins notched a three-point play to put the Maroons ahead by six 56-50.  The Hornets responded with a 6-0 run to tie the game up at 56-56 at the 7:37 mark.  The two teams only netted points from free throws over the next three minutes, until Gabrielle Clark dropped in a layup, giving Shenandoah a three-point, 62-59 lead.  Over those final five mintues, Hankins scored all five of Roanoke's remaining points, but couldn't get Roanoke over the edge, as the Maroons lost 67-64 in ODAC action.
 
Shenandoah's Holly Chittenden led all players with 21 points, shooting 11-12 from the free throw line.  She also completed a double-double, pulling down 11 boards.  Chittenden also had four assists.  Two other Hornets were in double-digits as Crystal Petrus and Sara D'Amico each finished with 12 points.  D'Amico also tallied four steals.
 
Roanoke narrowly outshot Shenandoah 37-36 percent from the field, but held a greater advantage from behind the arc, 39-29 percent.  The Hornets outrebounded the Maroons 42-40, along with a lead in steals, 8-7.
 
The Maroons return to action on Monday, January 7th as they face off against Mary Washington in Roanoke's final non-conference game of the regular season.  That contest is scheduled for a 5:00 PM tip-off.
