Maroons Roll in Non-Conference Contest Over Mary Washington, 55-42 on Monday
SALEM – The Roanoke College women's basketball team won in convincing fashion over the University of Mary Washington, 55-42 on Monday.  The Maroons now have a record of 5-8, while the Eagles now sit at 9-3.
 
Paxton Gwin led the Maroons in scoring with 22 points, hitting four three-pointers on the afternoon.  She was followed by Laurel Hankins with eight points.  Rachel Dellehunt led squad with eight rebounds and six assists.
 
The Maroons jumped on the Eagles early, taking a 7-2 lead in the first five minutes of the contest.  Roanoke held their lead through the 7:56 mark in the first half when Mary Washington's Sam Partonen knocked down a three to give the Eagles their first advantage of the game, 14-13.  Roanoke's Kayla Lemke knocked down a pair of free throws to quickly give Roanoke the advantage again.  Mary Washington seized the lead again with just three minutes to play in the period, but Roanoke wouldn't let that stand for long.  Paxton Gwin knocked down a trey, followed by a layup by Tatum McKee that gave Roanoke the two point advantage, 24-22, entering the locker room.
 
Roanoke came out of the half hot, extending their lead to six, 32-26, in the first two minutes of the period.  A Kelsey Smith jumper at 13:34 gave the Maroons their largest lead up to that point in the contest, 40-30.  The Eagles could only pull the game within six, 42-36 with 10:43 to play.  The Maroons continued to build up their lead over the Eagles, with Laurel Hankins knocking down five free throws at the end of the game to ultimately put Roanoke ahead by 13, 55-42 to win the non-conference matchup.
 
The Eagles were led by Aby Diop who dropped in 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds.  She was followed by Sam Partonen who had 12 points.  Aubrey Howland tied Diop as the top rebounder on the squad, picking up eight boards as well.
 
Roanoke outshot Mary Washington 34.5 to 29.1 percent from the field, while also holding the advantage from behind the arc, 31.6 to 11.8 percent.  The Maroons also outrebounded the Eagles, 41-37.
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, January 9th as they play host to ODAC opponent, Lynchburg.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM tip-off.
