Maroons Fall to Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC Action on Saturday
VIRGINIA BEACH – The Roanoke College women's basketball team ran into a tough Virginia Wesleyan squad on Saturday, falling in the ODAC contest 76-47.  The Maroons now have a record of 5-10, 1-5 ODAC while the Marlins are 8-6 and 4-2 in ODAC play.

Virginia Wesleyan opened the first five minutes of the contest with a 12-2 run, that would cause separation between the two teams for the remainder of the contest.  Megan Gadell hit an old-fashioned three-point play shortly after that to cut the deficit to seven.  By the 10:00 mark in the first half, Wesleyan had built a lead of 15, 27-12.  Each time the Maroons scored, the Marlins responded with a basket of their own, holding the deficit at 15 through the final minutes of the first half.  The teams entered the locker room with Virginia Wesleyan ahead 47-25.

Paxton Gwin, Rachel Dellehunt and Laurel Hankins each hit jumpers in the opening moments of the second half for the Maroons, looking to cut in to the Marlins' lead.  However, Virginia Wesleyan locked their lead at 25 for most of the second half, answering to each of Roanoke's baskets.  Roanoke trailed by 33, until D.J. Wilson and Kailey Sitzberger each hit jumpers in the final moments of the contest to get within 29 at the end of the game.  Roanoke fell 76-49 in the ODAC contest.

Paxton Gwin finished the contest with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 6-10 from the field.  She was followed in scoring by Tatum McKee with nine points.

Virginia Wesleyan's Brittany Glasco led all players with 15 points, while also shooting 6-10 from the floor.  Two other Marlins finished in double-digits as Sara Seipp tallied 12 and Kelly Jones finished with 11.  Katie Tassa pulled down a team high eight rebounds.

The Marlins outshot the Maroons 44.3 to 30.9 percent from the field, while Roanoke held the advantage from the free throw line, 65 to 50 percent.  Virginia Wesleyan narrowly outrebounded Roanoke 42-39.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, January 16th as they play host to Emory & Henry in the Bast Center.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM tip-off.
