Women's Basketball Drops ODAC Contest to Virginia Wesleyan, 77-69 on Saturday
SALEM – Despite a tough defensive stand in the second half, the Roanoke College women's basketball team fell in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action to Virginia Wesleyan, 77-69 on Saturday.  The Maroons are now 9-14, 5-9 in the ODAC, while the Marlins move up to 15-8, 10-4 in ODAC play.

Tatum McKee led the Maroons in scoring with 19 points, along with seven rebounds and a team high five steals.  She was followed in scoring by Paxton Gwin who had 16 points and led all players in rebounds with eight.  Also in double figures for the Maroons was Laurel Hankins who scored 14 points to go along with four assists.

Roanoke jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first half, as four different Maroons scored in the first 2:30.  McKee helped build Roanoke's lead to eight by hitting a layup and following with a trey to put the Maroons up 16-8 with 12:54 to play.  With 7:31 on the clock, McKee hit an old-fashioned three-point play to put Roanoke up by 10, 29-19.  The Marlins started to make their comeback at this point, as Sarah Seipp scored 10 consecutive points to tie the game at 29-29.  Seipp hit another trey with 4:39 to play to give Virginia Wesleyan its first lead of the game.  The Marlins entered the locker room with the three-point lead, 40-37.

The Maroons opened the second half with a pair of Rachel Dellehunt free throws and a Hankins layup to reclaim the 41-40 lead.  Over the next seven minutes, there were seven lead changes until Virginia Wesleyan pulled ahead 55-53 after a Nancy Kelly layup.  The Marlins extended their lead to as many as 12 after two Andrea Paphites baskets.  However, Roanoke spurred a comeback behind the offensive effort of Paxton Gwin, who scored eight consecutive points to bring Roanoke back within two, 69-67 with 3:08 to play.  That would be the end of Roanoke's run as the Marlins outscored the Maroons 8-2 over the final minutes, as Roanoke fell 77-69 in the ODAC contest.

Sarah Seipp came of the bench for the Marlins to score a team-high 16 points, she also tied Brittany Glasco to lead the team in rebounds with six each.  Nancy Kelly followed in scoring with 15 points.  Glasco also finished the contest with 14 pointes, while Andrea Paphites tallied 11.

The Marlins narrowly outshot the Maroons 50 to 46 percent from the field, while Roanoke held the edge from behind the arc, 30.8 to 29.2 percent.  The Marlins outrebounded the Maroons 37-27, as well as leading in assists 19-15.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, February 13th as they make the short trip to Hollins University.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM tip-off.
