Women's Basketball Defeats N.C. Wesleyan For First Win of Season
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Roanoke College women's basketball team picked up it's first win of the season with a 74-60 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan College in the second game of the Daly Sevens Hotels Classic.
 
Paxton Gwin scored a career-high 27 points in the contest, 19 of which came from the first half alone.  Also achieving a career-high was Rachel Dellehunt, who dished out eight assists during the afternoon.
 
The Maroons (1-2) jumped out to an early lead and had built an advantage of 15, 28-13, just 10 minutes into the first half.  The Battling Bishops (0-2) built a 7-2 run over the next five minutes to pull within 12, bur Roanoke continued to keep up the pressure.  Paxton Gwin scored nine of the Maroons next 12 points to close out the half ahead 12, 42-30.
 
Gwin led the Maroons at halftime with 19 points, shooting 8-11 from the field.  Rachel Dellehunt topped the squad with five assists in the first 20 minutes and Kelsey Smith had four rebounds.
 
Roanoke continued to roll in the second half, never dropping to a lead lower than eight points.  10 minutes into the second half, the Maroons began to rattle off a 17-5 run that saw six different players score to put the Maroons ahead by at most, 20 points.  After the impressive streak by Roanoke, the Battling Bishops held the Maroons to just four points over the final five minutes, but the deficit was too large to overcome.  The Maroons finished the contest ahead by 14 to pick up their first win of the 2012-13 season.
 
Roanoke outshot N.C. Wesleyan 43.9 to 34.7 percent from the field, while the Battling Bishops held the edge behind the arc, 33.3 to 27.8 percent.  The Maroons crashed the boards to pull down 50 rebounds to N.C. Wesleyan's 31.
 
Gwin led the Maroons with 19 points, followed by Kelsey Smith and Laurel Hankins with 13 points each.  Gwin and Markia Beckwith each had a team high seven rebounds, while Dierra Wilson pulled down six.
 
The Battling Bishops' Samantha Urquhart was second amongst all players on the afternoon with 19 points, shooting 7-11 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line.  Derreon Cole tallied 14 points and tied for a team high seven rebounds with Amanda Sherman.
 
The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, November 20th as they play host to Salem College at Bast Gymnasium.  The contest is scheduled for a 6:00 PM start.
