Women's Basketball Falls in Contest with Salem, 57-47 on Tuesday
SALEM – The Roanoke College women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest to Salem College, 57-47 on Tuesday night.
 
Roanoke (1-3) jumped out to an early five point lead over Salem (2-1) as Paxton Gwin and Tatum McKee hit a two and three, respectively, to open the contest.  The Maroons held the lead for the first seven minutes of the contest, until Salem took over.  The Spirits built a lead of as many as 15 through the first half.  With 2:25 to play, Roanoke trailed 32-20, but a three-pointer by Laurel Hankins sparked a 6-2 run to end the half.  After 20, Roanoke trailed 34-26.
 
At the start of the second half, Salem's Shaniqua Collins hit a trey to get the ball rolling again for the Spirits.  With 10:18 to play, Salem had built a lead of 15 again, but Roanoke was ready for a comeback.  Markia Beckwith hit a three pointer to cut the lead down to 12, 49-37.  Rachel Dellehunt and Hanna Ward both hit layups to cut the lead down to eight, with 6:04 to play.  With 1:32 on the clock, Hankins hit a pair of free throws to pull within six, 53-47, but those would be Roanoke's last points of the contest as Satavia Taylor hit four free throws down the stretch to give Salem the 57-47 win.
 
The Maroons edged the Spirits in shooting, 29 to 28.8 percent from the field for the night.  Salem led in steals 13-10 and rebounds 57-48.  The Maroons led in the assists department 11-8.
 
Paxton Gwin led the Maroons on the floor with 12 points, followed by Tatum McKee with nine and Kelsey Smith with eight.  Rachel Dellehunt took the lead for Roanoke in rebouns with eight and assists with three.  Mckee and Laurel Hankins helped the Maroons from the free throw line , shooting 4-5 and 3-4, respectively.
 
Salem's Satavia Taylor led all players with 18 points, shooting 7-8 from the free throw line.  Jasmine Shabazz tallied a double-double netting 12 points and pulling down 14 rebounds to lead all in the category.
 
The Maroons return to action on Monday, November 26th as they face off against Christopher Newport in Bast Gymnasium.  That contest is scheduled for a 6:00 PM tip.
