Roanoke Drops Non-Conference Game to Christopher Newport, 62-46 on Monday
SALEM – The Roanoke College women's basketball team fell in non-conference action to Christopher Newport University, 62-46 on Monday night.

Kelsey Smith led Roanoke (1-4) in scoring with 11 points, followed by Meghan Gadell who tallied eight.  Tatum McKee topped all players on the Maroons with nine rebounds.  McKee also had a team high five steals, while Rachel Dellehunt finished with four.

Christopher Newport's (3-0) Tia Perry led all players in the contest with 17 points and 16 rebounds to complete a double-double.   Nicole Mitchell also finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and eight steals.

The Maroons were outshot from the field 35.6 to 30.4 percent, but led from the three point line hitting three three-pointers to the Captains' two.   Christopher Newport led in rebounds 49-34, as well as assists (9-6) and steals (18-13).

Roanoke jumped out to an early lead, as Smith scored the first three points for the Maroons.  Christopher Newport took it's first advantage at 17:51 when Hobbs hit a layup to go up by one point.  Through the first seven minutes, the two teams would tie the game twice, the last tie being 8-8 at 13:07.  It was a Tia Perry jumper that gave Christopher Newport the lead that they would hold on to for the remainder of the contest.  The Captains led by as many as 11 in the first half, but Roanoke was able to cut the deficit to six at the end of the period.

Paxton Gwin opened the second half with a layup that would bring the Maroons within four, but that was the closest the Maroons would get the score in the period.  Christopher Newport led 48-41 with nine minutes to play, and would in turn go on a 14-5 run that would last through the end of the contest, giving the Captains the 62-46 victory.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, December 1st as they travel to Bridgewater to play in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.  That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start.
