Gwin Scores 23 in Roanoke's 65-61 Loss to Stevenson on Saturday
OWINGS MILLS, MD – The Roanoke College women's basketball team (2-7) had tied Stevenson University (4-3) 29-29 at half, but were outscored in the second, falling 65-61 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Paxton Gwin led all players in the contest, tallying 23 points while shooting 11-20 from the field.  Gwin also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked two shots.  Gwin was followed in scoring by Laurel Hankins, who notched 13 points on the afternoon.  Tatum McKee topped all players in the contest in boards, finishing the contest with eight rebounds.  McKee also had a team high three steals.
 
Roanoke went on a hot streak early as Mckee, Rachel Dellehunt, and Hankins all hit layups to open the contest with the Maroons up 6-0.  Through the first 10 minutes, the Mustangs continued to close the gap with the Maroons, but Roanoke remained ahead.  With 10:10 to play, Meghan Gadell hit a layup to put the Maroons up by six again, 18-12.  However, Stevenson went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to take a 20-18 lead.  Roanoke continued to tie the game up over the remainder of the half, but trailed by three with 2:46 remaining in the half.  Gadell drained a three at the end of the first half to tie the game at 29-29 as the teams entered the locker room.
 
Both teams traded the lead over the first 2:30 of the first half, with Roanoke going up 33-32 with 17:30 to play.  Stevenson responded with an 11-0 run to go ahead 43-33 with 13:28 to play.  Paxton Gwin hit a layup at 9:12 to pull the Maroons within one, but the Mustangs continued to create separation.  With 5:22 Gwin hit another layup to pull within one again, 55-54.  The Maroons stayed close over the next five minutes, but could never reclaim the lead, with Stevenson winning the game 65-61.
 
Stevenson outshot Roanoke 43.3 to 38.7 percent, while the Maroons were strong from behind the arc, shooting 50 percent to the Mustangs' 29.4 percent.  Stevenson held a narrow edge in rebounds 39-37, and both teams dished out 16 assists in the game.
 
The Maroons return to action on Sunday, December 16th as they travel to Frederick, MD to face off against Hood College in non-conference action.  That game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM tip-off.
