Women's Basketball Ends 2012 with 55-49 Win over Hood College
FREDERICK, MD – The Roanoke College women's basketball team closed out the 2012 year with a 55-49 victory over Hood College in non-conference action.

The Maroons (3-7) were led by Paxton Gwin, who tallied 13 points and nine rebounds.  Gwin was followed by Laurel Hankins who finished with 11 points.  The Maroons were strong as the boards, with Gwin's nine rebounds, as well as nine from Kelsey Smith and eight from Hankins.  Tatum McKee led all players in steals with four.

Hood College (3-6) was led by Dyanna Prater, who put up 14 points and four rebounds.  Brianna Lee also put up double-digits with 12 points on the afternoon.  Rachel Wiley topped the Blazers in rebounds, pulling down seven boards.  Emily Maerz led in assists, dishing out five during the contest.

As they did in the contest against Stevenson on Saturday, the Maroons got off to a hot start.  McKee opened with a three-pointer, which was followed by a Rachel Dellehunt layup to put Roanoke up by five early.  The Maroons extended their lead early to seven, but the Blazers fought back and tied the game up at 10-10 with 11:09 to play in the half.  That would be the only time since the start of the game that the score would be tied, as Roanoke rallied a 12-0 run that saw treys from Gwin, Hankins, and Smith.  Hood went on a streak of its own to close out the half, outscoring the Maroons 13-4.  Entering the locker room, Roanoke was ahead by three, 26-23.

With 13:40 to play in the second half, Hood reclaimed the lead, 31-30.  Over the next six minutes, the Blazers extended the lead to five points, 39-34 with 7:22 left.  Dierra Wilson and Kayla Lemke combined for five points over the next minute to tie the game back up at 39-39, putting Roanoke back in the contest.  The teams traded baskets back and forth until a layup by Gwin gave Roanoke the ultimate lead at 49-47.  Free throws by McKee, Hankins, and Dellehunt sealed the 55-49 win for the Maroons.

Roanoke outshot Hood 29.8 to 26.6 percent.  The Maroons outrebounded the Blazers 51 to 38, and the two teams tied in steals (10-10) and blocks (3-3).  Hood held the advantage in turnovers 17-28 as well as 11-7.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, January 2nd as they open a four game home stand, taking on Hollins University in the Bast Center.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM tip-off.
