Maroons Cruise in 72-56 Win Over Hollins on Thursday
ROANOKE - The Roanoke College women's basketball team opened up the 2014 year with a 72-56 victory over Hollins University on Thursday evening. The Maroons now have a record of 3-7 while Hollins now has a mark of 2-7.

Paxton Gwin led the team in scoring, netting 16 points, shooting 7-13 from the field. She also finished with four rebounds. Tatum McKee also finished in double digits, tallying 11 points and pulling down a team high six rebounds. Laurel Hankins finished the contest with 10 points, going along with three steals and two assists. Hannah ward led the team in steals with five, while Bridget Holleran and Markia Beckwith acquired three steals on the evening.

Gwin got the ball rolling for the Maroons, opening the scoring with a three-pointer in the first minute of the game. While Hollins scored the next three points to tie the game, the Maroons went on a 11-4 run through the 13:14 mark, capped off by a three by McKee. Over the next three minutes, the Maroons went on another 11-4 run, with four points from Gwin, as well as five made free throws. With 10:00 to play in the first half, Roanoke led by 11, 25-14. The Maroons were able to hold on to the 11 point lead through the remainder of the period, entering the locker room with a 39-28 lead.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Roanoke extended its lead to 14, including five points by Laurel Hankins. The Maroons continued to pile on the baskets in the second half, taking a six minute, 19-1 run which included six points from Bridget Holleran and four more from Gwin. With 9:03 to play, the Maroons had their largest lead of the game as Holleran hit a layup to put Roanoke ahead by 30, 66-36. In the final nine minutes, Hollins outscored Roanoke 20-6, but Roanoke's lead was large enough to outlast the charge from Hollins, picking up the 72-56 victory.

Hollins finished with a higher field goal percentage, hitting 44.2 percent of its shots, while Roanoke netted 35.9 percent of its baskets. The Maroons hit 30.4 percent from behind the arc to Hollins' 28.6 percent. Hollins also led in the rebound department (43-37) as well as turnovers (34-21). Roanoke put up 25 points from the bench as well.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, January 5th as they play host to Stevenson University in the Bast Center. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
