Women's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight, Defeats Bridgewater 78-64
BRIDGEWATER - The Roanoke College women's basketball team remains undefeated in 2013, picking up its fifth straight victory with a 78-64 win over Bridgewater College. The Maroons have a record of 7-7, 3-3 in ODAC play, while the Eagles are now 5-9, 3-3 in the ODAC.

Over the course of the last five games, the Maroons are averaging 73 points a game, compared to their opponents 59.4 points per contest. Three of the wins have come against non-conference opponents, while last two have been against conference teams. Roanoke's performance in the last five games have helped them become the third highest scoring team in the conference, netting 72.8 points per game. Roanoke also leads the conference in steals, with 11.4 steals a game.

Paxton Gwin led the Maroons in scoring with 24 points. She hit nine shots from the field, while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds. Gwin's 24 points moves her into 12th on Roanoke's all-time scoring list, tallying 1,121 points so far in her career. She is 35 points from moving into 11th, passing Mary Beth Harvey '84 (1,155). Gwin was followed in scoring by Laurel Hankins, who tallied 14 points. Hankins was 6-9 from the floor on the afternoon, while picking up seven rebounds. Tatum McKee also ended the game with seven rebounds to go along with four points. Anna Carter finished in double-digits with a career-high 12 points.

The first few minutes of the contest saw nine lead changes before Roanoke ultimately took the 9-8 advantage at the 15:09 mark. Anna Carter's layup at that point spurred a 10-0 run that gave the Maroons a nine-point 17-8 advantage. That run saw five points from Paxton Gwin as well as three points from Anna Carter and a layup from Kanisha Wiley. After the Eagles began a comeback, cutting the lead down to five, Meghan Gadell hit a jumper to give the Maroons a 23-15 lead. Starting at 4:28, Bridgewater scored six straight points to get within one, 26-25. Gwin and Kelsey Smith answered with layups of their own, pushing the lead back to five. The final 2:21 consisted of three free throws made by each team, as Roanoke ended the half with a 33-28 lead.

The Maroons scored the first five points of the second half, extending the team's lead to 38-28 through the first two minutes of the half. Bridgewater's Molly Shelley and Cassidy Burkholder combined for the next six consecutive points to bring the contest back to a four-point differential.

By the 14:43 mark, Roanoke had pushed its lead back out to 10 points, with three pointers from Kelsey Smith and Laurel Hankins. Five minutes later, the Maroons held a lead of 11 points, after a layup by Gwin. A minute later, Gwin hit a trey as Roanoke went up by 13, 61-48. Laurel Hankins hit a layup with 5:30 to give the Maroons its largest lead of the game, 15 points, as Roanoke led 69-54. The lead would hold through the remainder of the game as the Maroons defeated Bridgewater 78-64.

The Maroons shot 37.5 percent from the field, and outrebounded the Eagles 49-46. On the road, Roanoke also led in assists (11-9), points off turnover (20-19) and second chance points (17-8).

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, January 21st as they play host to Randolph College. That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
